I have an 88 sunbird gt turbo convertable and it drives fine for a while but then cutts off when braking and shifting in drive or reverse. It runs great and idles fine.. Someone told me it was the oxygen sensor, pcv valve, or the fuel injection o rings. I thought it was the fuel filter so I just changed it and added lucas fuel injection cleaner. Also the check gauges light is flashing and all the gauges read fine.
U need to find out, What code you are getting, Go to mechanic's garage or scan tool i, Then once you find out, Youre car with run fine.
I looked for that but it just flashes on and off, on and off, no certain way. I've been looking for codes for the flahing but all I can find is for the check engine light and its not on.
I took it to my mechanic and he said its doin that because it sat so long it just needs to be drove so it hasn't done it the past 2 days i guess thats it. How can I turn off the check gauges light? Is there a fuse or something. Its getting annoying. Thanks.
Ur mechanic is fired! The problem is the TCC or better know as the torque convertor clutch (switch). It is mounted on the transmission for automatics only and what happens is over time the fluid gets to hot or worn no longer doing it's job and fries the switch causing the car to shut off either in drive coming to a stop or shifting from drive to reverse.U can simply disconnect it and solve the issue but, highly recommend replacing ur trans fluid and the switch while discon the switch has no affect on the cars running there may be a miled affect on mpg and thats about it.This will not throw a code, and I do not know the exact location on ur model yr or any autos being I own a manual trans.I would inquire in the second gen forum for someone to pm u with its location like sharky who prolly would know.OK
thanks for the info i'm definately changing the fluid but where exactly is the switch and what is the name of it so i can get one?
Should be called TCC torque convertor clutch switch. As for the location pm SHARKY in the first or second gen forum for its exact location.
