Engine mount bad??

1998 Cavalier base engine automatic transmission 74000 miles
When the transmission is put into either drive or reverse the engine seems to move in its mounts much more than I would think it should. It lifts and rotates an inch or inch and a half so I would estimate. Is this normal? I have no idea how much movement is acceptable. You can also make the engine move upward by pushing the car rearward as far as it will go with the transmission in park. The large mount at the top right of the engine is the upper engine mount correct?

As long as the engine isn't hitting anything, and the wires don't look too tight it's fine. Both the 2.2 and 2.4s will rock and roll quite a bit.

It will, i just replaced a motor mount in a 2.4. There was an "insert" int here before to keep it from moving as much but it just causes nasty vibrations below 1k rpm. If you don't mind the vibration you can get poly mounts, the engine will move less. Don't worry 'bout it though, its normal and will be fine.

Yeah, I have a 1998 z22. I had the transmission strut replaced and both motor mounts. Before I had them replaced she made a real nasty "clunk" into drive and reverse, and like you said a very abnormal amount of movement. Once you replace these she'll have alot more get up and go. More torque on pavement. After the replacement, mine still clunked. Now I'm looking at CV joints and transaxles. BUT!!!! MAKE SURE when your getting motor mounts replaced - you can save alot of time by drilling out that jam nut. It's cheap white metal and will not come free without cutting the rubber around it. Don't waste time pounding, using torches and drilling without first cutting the rubber.
