When it gets little hot it slows down
Tuesday, October 03, 2006 6:51 PM
Recently after running 10 min with my 2001 z24 it looses horsepower, like 30% loss of power. it seems when the car get warmer after 10 min of driving it slows down.
Specially this happens early in the morning when i start my car to go to work.
I got now 100.00/km on the car and i didnt have any major repair done to it. The car is running fine and very well maintained. Recently i changed the fuel filter, cleaned the throttle body, changed air filter and my spark plugs thinking if i do a tune-up on it the problem will go away but that didnt happen.
what could be the problem here?

Regards

I would take a look at getting the fuel filter replaced, Could even get a fuel pressure test done.

Normally you'll lose a little power when the cars hot for the fact the your Cooling fan kicks on to cool the radiator fluid, so it has an extra draw to the car.

But after 10mins, you shouldnt have a big draw like that at running temp.

Suspect what Rick Weeks said. Also check the cars charging system. If the alternator isnt giving the battery the correct amount of power back, then you got a major draw from the car as is.

Hope it helps

PS- What kind of plugs did you change to?

...They just HATE it when you ...POINT - LAUGH - then DRIVE OFF AND AWAY-!...

I did change the fuel filter, that the first thing i did. But it didnt change anything. Maybe clean the injectors, that what im gonna do next.

I changed to Bosh platinum2 plugs. But that problem was there before i did the tune up.

So i need to chek the alternator power, clean the injectors and test the fuel pump pressure. I guess i'll start with the alternator test which is the cheapest and see what do i get. If im guessing the right, to test the alternator you disconect the battery wires and put the volt-meter on the wires and start the car right? you should get 12 volts.

With modern cars it is NOT a good idea to disconnect the battery with the engine running.
If you disconnect the battery you won't be able to start the car.

Here is a link explaining why it is not a good idea to disconnect the battery with the engine running

http://www.forparts.com/techbattery.htm

To check the alternator :-
1. Leave everything connected.
2. Test the voltage across the battery terminals should be approx 12.5 volts
3. Start the engine, voltage across the battery terminals should increase to approx 14.5 volts (12.5 volts or less and the alternator is not working, you are reading battery volts only)
4. Carefully, test between the large output terminal on the alternator (+ve) and ground/earth/chassis(-ve), the reading should be within 0.5 volts of 3.

Hope this helps

Sounds to me like it could be a plugged cat. When you notice it lose power, does it smell funny? Does the cat glow red (extreme case)? If you let it cool down, does it gain it's power back?

15.3 @ 89.97mph, 14's on the way?

Thanks for the link...i tested the alternator whil the car is runing and the wires conected and i got 14.4 which is normal. I guess we can say its not from the alternator.

Ian when i start my car in the morning it does smell funny yes but only when i start it. It does regain power yes only to loose it again after like 5 or 10 min. I realy dont know if the cat turns red or not. i'll have to stop and take a look at it after a cruise.

Anything else?

Wy? i thought the Bosh were better than the Delcos. I have no problems since i installed them. The delcos are cheaper also.....

Im cleaning the injectors on monday to see if its gonna solve the problem. I'll keep you posted.
