So I went on a mountain run last sunday and had a little accident. I bent the radiator back on the right side and it caught a leak. While trying to limp the car back on water it eventually overheated and lost all power. Right before it killed off, I'd be cruising at around 55/60mph to get some air circulating. I was constantly going back and forth from 4th to 5th and so on until no matter what gear I put it in, it would still creep to having no power. Everytime I was get on the gas there would be a pinging noise but nothing hardcore. It sounded much like putting a pencil or pen onto a common fan found in a home.
Got the car towed home and got started on pulling the head to check the valves and I just wanted to know if that pinging noise probably would've been a valve? We'll find out soon enough but I just wanted to ask here so see if I can get an idea. We got under the engine and saw a lot of oil (dried up already) running down the back of the engine below the intake mani (on the head and on the block).
So the ideas we have so far are:
Floated valve(s)
Cracked head
Cracked block (doubt it)
Blown head gasket
So I just wanted to get some ideas flowing on what everyone else thinks! It's a 02 2200 w/ 70k on it and it was DEFINATELY a abused engine

! Thanks for the help and I'll post up pics as I get the head off!
P.s - After taking off the valve cover, one of the pushrods does look slight bent but doesn't have any creases or hard bends, just a nice smooth bend. Haven't taken them out yet, but, soon! Thanks!

Jamal, sorry I didn't see this earlier, I don't come to the maintainance forum too often.
Did you happent to see what the temp got up to? I have a felling that you warped the head, causing the HG to let go. You may or may not notice if water got into the oil. Pull you dipstick and look at the oil on it.If the HG blew, it will look like chocolate milk and the level will most likely be high.
Pull the head and take it to a machine shop and have them check the straightness of the head. You may or may not be able to get the head resurfaced to flat, it depends on how much it warped. By the book, you can only surface the head a small amount. If you have roller rockers, you can take a little more off, without affecting the lifter preload, since that is adjustable. If it can be resurfaced, go ahead and get a valve job done and whatever other head work done at this time.
I doubt that the block warped, but it is possible, you may want to have that checked also. As for wether or not any other block damage has occured, you'll have to pull the oil pan to be sure. I've see it go both ways, with the water in the oil. You'll need to check the condition of the bearings. I would hedge on the safe side and plan on doing a ring and bearing job, along with a head job. (Now would be a good time for a cam, if thats on your to do list!

)
My Ex ran my car hot and warped the head, but it had 197k miles on it. I had to get another head and with the mileage, went ahead and rebuilt the motor and tranny. I was supprised to find there was not a whole lot of wear on the motor, you would have never thought it had so many miles!
Good Luck!
I just looked at you profile, I guess it's onto PHASE 4!

I'd say the head warped, which most likely lead to the headgasket blowing out. After that the coolant probably got into the cylinder and washed the oil off the walls, ruining the cylinders. While the coolant was in there it was also trying to compress the water which would lead to banged up rod bearings. I'd say bite the bullet and prepare for a full rebuild. On the plus side, it's a perfect situation for a performance build
