I also posted this in the 3rd gen, but wanted to post in the main forums to get more opinions. Changed the oil on my 02 Sunfire last weekend using Mobile 1 10W30 Full Syn at 99,520 miles. Drove it once, parked it for two days. Drove it this morning, and noticed there is a tapping noise from the top end, sounds like cyl 1. Are these engines common for having sticky lifters or something? That's exactly what it sounds like, IMO. When you put it under pressure (or dont) and rev it, the sound is drowned out. At idle, it is very audible. Sounds as bad as my first truck that had the 350. I put in some Marvel's Mys Oil, but it didnt change it, yet. Should I just take the valve cover off and take a look? Anyone have a photo of this engine's head so I know what I am getting into?
Frankly, I think she's just jealous that I got another car that is 3 times older with half as many miles...

Yah its normal ...now if its super loud then maybe you have aproblem..but its rather normal..phil
Thanks for the input. I just read a few somewhat related posts, and it seems like everyone likes to re-iterate that it's the timing chain and/or guides. If this was the cause, would it be most audible from the top or bottom? Mine sounds like it is right on top on the passenger's side. Guess I'll have to pull the valve cover off and take a look around. It's leaking anyways, might as well redo it. If that aint it, I'm guessing I ought to have the timing chain done, since I'm right at 100k miles anyways...
