What are some signs that the Belt Tensioner is goin bad?
possible belt squeaking....the tensioner may have froze in a position where it is not putting enough tension on the belt....check the tensioner and see if it is frozen...the tensioner pulley could go bad as well...y u ask?
Well i changed my water pump on my 2200 and i had the hardest time trin ot put the belt back on. After i finally got it on and started the car everything was fine. About a week after that my pulleys would randomly start runnin really really loud. Like an old car, you can hear the pulleys goin around and its really annoying. It will do it randomly not all the time. It will start when i start the car then drive, stop, shut off the car, come back start the car and it wont do it.

x2
Also try some belt dressing for the belt (might help). And please be sure not to over do it. Over dressing a belt causes it to slip, making more noise. Squeeeeeeeeeal!!!
Food for thought.
...They just HATE it when you ...POINT - LAUGH - then DRIVE OFF AND AWAY-!...
There is a fix for squeaky belt in the GM manual.
Apparently belt material can pill up in the pulley grooves over time.
Solution is to remove the belt, wire brush the grooves clean, replace the belt.
I did this to mine after tolerating the squeak for 6 months. Now the belt is quiet!
it's not a squeakin belt i can tell thats not it. its one of the pulleys like a bearing or something went out on one of them
you could take a screw driver to the pulley while the car is running.....be careful you don't want to slip and have the screwdriver get tangled up......use a long screwdriver as a stethoscope, put the screwdriver on the center bolt of the pulley and listen if it is making a howling noise....if you dont want to do it that way then you can take the belt off and spin all pulleys by hand and listen for any grittiness or howling in them............
make sure the tensior is lined up correctly.
There is a little hole and a post that are supposed to line up.
I made the mistake of not alligning them correctly when I had replaced my belt and it make that god awful noise.
It only does it when I turn my ac on now, so I have to find a fix for that.
My squeaking belt sounded like a bearing and I was ready to buy a new tensioner until I read the section in the GM manual I mentioned above.
