Starting Issues- Flywheel or flexplate?
Friday, September 08, 2006 9:22 PM
Hello folks i ve got some questions....

Symptoms- the starter spins but nothing happens...After a couple times (key on off) it will start. Sometimes it fires up first shot. Really random. (once the car is running it drives like a dream)

So heres is the deal...the starter was grinding. So i took it in and had it replaced. No biggie right? wrong...now it keeps doing it. I talk to the machainic he says it must have broke teeth of of the flywheel and it need to be replaced.
Here is the real kicker he says he has to drop the transmission and it will cost about $1000...wtf? i just dropped 200 on a starter? Anybody else have this issue. Suggestions? Solutions?

Anyboyd got suggestions....the cars got 105,000 on it....

If it were broken teeth on the flywheel it would not turn after a couple of ON/OFFs from the key as the starter pinion would be in a "Gap" in the flywheel teeth.

If the starter spins but nothing happens then the starter engagement mechanism is at fault, loose connection OR (as I have read on this board somewhere) the wrong replacement starter has been fitted.

I would suspect the "new" starter

Hope this helps

pull the starter out and check the teeth on the flywheel.....if all teeth are present i would also suspet the NEW starter

Well i have not clue how to take of the starter and check the "Flywheel" so i brought the car back in to the shop and they put a new starter in the car.

They said the old one was bad, but when i start the car is still grinds for a quick second? Whats the deal...its def. the correct starter.

Why does it keep doing this?....Is it safe to assume the flywheel is shot?

Thanks in adavance....

are these all rebuilt starters? if so, were the Shims used?
Sometimes, rebuilt starters have shaved down mounts due to damage from prior users so they supply shims to fill in the space needed for the bendix gear to bite.

Dont know if it helps but hope it does!

From what i understand these are ALL rebuilt starters...i peeked under the hood and you can see it, its like stamped on the top in "wording".

So question is... were the shims used? Can you see the shims? Call the mech and ask. Most dont realize that if you dont use the shims, the bendix gear can miss, chip the teeth, or not make full contact. If no shims were added, then do so.
Let us know what you find out!
