hey. own a 2000 pontiac sunfire 2.2l. and there was a recall about some switch that i had to get replaced a couple years ago. some gray box that a wire goes to the starter and got no idea where the other wires go too, the is located up by the battery on the front of the car. what's wrong is when i'm about to start the car there's nothing happening, no sound or nothing, but when i get someone to tape this little box with a screwdriver (etc) the car starts. so i'm guessing the box is getting bad. what is this called??? and is there anyway i can fix it. thanks
it was a relay that was installed to help correct the ignition switch from catching fire when the car was off. The Gray box is called a relay. I believe it's a weather proof relay so that it can take some water hitting it and what not. If you are hitting it with a screwdriver and it's working I would check to see if maybe the wires going into the relay are corroded or have a bad connection (i.e. rust ) I would try cleaning those contacts first and use some contact cleaner. If it still acts up then you know it's the relay. I would also make sure that you have a good connection at the starter and no corrosion issues either.
