Transaxle Seal Install
Tuesday, September 12, 2006 6:02 PM
Does anybody have any pointers on how to get a transaxle seal in to the transmission without damaging it, I tried tapping it in and one side would go, then when I tap the other side the other side would pop out..... real tight fit in there. I damaged the $25 part and want to keep it at only one more try. This time I went and bought a 1-5/8 socket to try to tap it in there so it hits all the way around the seal at once. Is the socket the only option I have?

You need to press the seal in all at once...

Since you have the socket, yes it will work.

An alternate method would be if the auto parts store rents tools, see if they have a seal press/seal installer/something round that will work...

BTW, NAPA should the seals for around $15

you use the OLD SEAL...

the old seal upside down will keep it from messing it up hope you understand..

Tranny seals are shaped differently, so this won't work, they are taller in the middle, and it's the outside edge you need to apply pressure to. The socket seems like as good an idea as any, the specialty tools for the job aren't accomplishing anything different than the socket would. We just did this last night, and it's a PITA without the proper tools.

OK I have the seal in but it seems like the drive axle isnt catching the c clamp at the end of the male adapter coming out of the transmission. The seal itself has two parts. The outer edge ring that is tapped into the trans which is what I was having problems getting in. Now the inside ring looks like it is sitting too far out of the transmission not allowing the C clamp to catch the drive axle. There is a little more than 3/4" of this collar sticking out. I have a picture of it below. Can somebody with a 4 spd please look and see if this is sticking out too much, thanks.
