My 2200 Annoys me everytime I change the oil. Seems like no matter what I try to do when I change the filter it always dumps oil all over the exhaust then it smokes it's rear end off for a while after. does anyone else have this issue?

Yes, it's a common problem due to the location of the filter. You will always dump some on the exhaust pipe regardless of what you do. I usually place a rag over the pipe to soak up what comes out when unscrewing the filter and then i'm careful to not spill anymore when removing the filter once it's in my hand.
Funny thing was this morning I was at my mechanic getting my oil changed and I mentioned this to the Tech and he was suprised how well it worked. I told him, that sometimes it takes weeks for that oil smell to burn off.

What some have done is put a cheap sheet of tin foil over the exhaust where the oil wil mess it.

I used to place a rag over the exhaust if warm, then a simple plastic bag. I never had any problem and no smoke/smell. Aluminum foil works well too.

How do you even get to the damn thing??? I don't change the oil myself because I don't know how to get to that thing.

I reach down from the top of the engine and just work till I can get a hold of the filter. Not to bad if you look down the back passenger side of the engine it's not really that hard to get to.

I didn't think it was THAT hard. I could always reach it from the bottom... even fit an oil filter wrench in there. Just don't burn yourself on the exhaust.

I have a 1998 Cavalier 2.2L and I always have a b**c* of a time doing oil changes. I find a decent way to do it is to have here on jack stands for the front and cut the wheel to the right, take the plastic sheething off on the passenger side and reach in.
i have the 2200 just got the car so i haven't had to change the oil yet but when i do i will try the rag trick. thanks for the heads up.
i never get smell/smoke for more than a day. frankly i jsut hate how i have to use my hand to twist it off, no oil wrench will fit down there. thank god for fram textured grips

i used to have that motor, brake clean the exhaust and flex pipe right there when you are done. gets rid of all of it then evaporates.
I put a plastic bag over the flex pipe when i had the stock exhaust helped alot with the problem. I just wipe everything off now that i don't have it anymore.
i put a big rag or a bag over the flex pipe if its cool its not that big of a prob for me
From someone at J Body Org it was suggested to switch
from AC PF-47 filter to PF-52...
The PF-52 is slightly longer and offers more "finger grip"....

remove the passenger front wheel, you can get at it from the side very easily. put foil/rag on top of your exhaust, so they dont get soaked in oil.

im lucky. i work at an autoshop and have ahoist available to me for oil changes. i used to be under neath the car and stick my left hand up by the exhause flex pipe and have one hand on the filter. next, i would take a filter wrench in my right hand and put it on the filter. to put on the wrench and to actually use the wrench i would go in on the right side under the right side fender liner and above the front right CV shaft. with my left hand i would keep the slack on the filter wrench tight while my right hand worked the filter off with the wrench.
to solve the problem with the oil on the flex pipe, i just take a piece of card board and bend it a few times and then place that over the flex pipe. the card board will allow the oil to drain off not even touching the flexpipe.

I get the filter from underneath with no problem. I cut about 1" off the end of a filter wrench handle; it now fits fine. I can change the oil in about 20 minutes. I wipe the exhaust down before firing it up, and the smell/smoke only lasts a couple of minutes. Been doing it this way on the wife's '96 Cavalier since it was new.
I wish the filter were as easy to get to as my parents focus, its damn near 2 inches under the front bumper
. Anyone attempt to do a filter relocation using a kit? Reason I ask is does the filter have to be at the same level as the old one to scavenge oil, or is that line pressurized (newb question)..
I'd love to make that a spring project and relocate it down to the side of the flex pipe.

thats what i do and an oil filter wrench does fit in there. thats how i do mine. takes me about a whole 10 mins to change the oil. longest part is letting the oil drain out
