1997 2.2 Engine Replacement

Sunfire 1997 2.2 Auto

Can anyone shed light on this. The OEM manual indicates this engine is removed through the bottom. i.e. after undoing everything, 'raise the car up leaving the engine in the support fixture'

Is this the only way to remove it? Can the engine be lifted out through the top using a stanard engine crane? In otherwords can this engine be replaced at home without the use of a car hoist?

Any tips appreciated.

Mike

Basically you are in the right direction, The engine get pulled from the top the car, Transmission can get pulled either way. A stanard engine crane will work very well for you. Or as my friend has a beam going across drive way, He uses a hand crank pulley, its a cheapo way it works.

good luck

Thanks for info. I've done many others, but never this one. It does look tight to come out through the top.

How about with or without the tranny attached. It is relativly simele to unbolt the tranny and leave it in the car (supported) (i.e. is their room to get at the bolts and then decouple the engine from the tranny?)

Or better to pull the hubs and CV's and lift the engine with the tranny still attached?

Just looking for the easiest/quickest way to get it out.

i've done mine this way, essentially once you have everything disconnected from the engine itself, (you should pull all the driven accessories, power steering pump, water pump, a/c comp etc...) the engine will com out the top. i took my hood off to give me even more clearance, but i'm lucky, i have an actual 2 ton chain hoist going across a steel girder in my garage (hooray for being a third generation mechanic) it was tight pulling the engine out w/o the transmission for me because the cutch was kinda in the way. but i suppose if i had to do it again, i could pull the engine in a little under two hours start to finish.

Great news. Thanks. I have a 1 ton hydraulic engine removing hoist. Works great. Used it many times. I also always remove the hood. This car is auto so hopefully I win't have any clutch issues. I was concerned about the space to slide the engine off the tranny input shaft. Sounds like removing all the belt accessories might do the trick.

Now to find a resonable rebuild. Any ideas on where/who in the GTA, Ontario (west end preferred) has reasonable 2.2's for 97 Sunfire?

I hear you have to watch out for the correct size engine to tranny dowel pin. They changed the size somewhere around 96/97? Correct? Anyway to know which size will be in 1997?

actually, if at all possible (never worked on an auto cav so i don't know) it may be easier to leave the torque converter in place, but just unbolt it from the flexplate. in theory (again, never having worked on an auto cav) you may be able to access the torque converter bolts from the starter opening, and rotate the engine with a socket on the crank bolt. because im sure if you take the engine out with the torque converter on, it will be messy. again, ive never worked on an auto cav before, but this makes sense to me... anyone else who could correct me help this guy out

That's what I've done w/ a V8... I would assume the same theory can be applied.
