Hello everyone,
I recently purchased a 2001 Cavalier Z24 Manual Transmission. It has been making a sort of "clicking" noise when it runs now. This noise increases as the RPMs increase. At first the noise was only present around 2,000 RPM, but now it seems to be there right when I start the car and idles high at first, and the noise is there idling at a light. It is very annoying, and I am worried something bad is happening.
Also, my clutch pedal doesn't engage until I have almost let off of it completely. I have been having some problems with stalling the car on hills and such because it is difficult to get the timing right when I am used to driving sticks that have clutch pedals that engage about halfway from the floor. Is there a way to adjust or fix this issue?
I will be taking my car into the shop next week, I just wanted some advice here first so that I can not be a complete idiot when talking to the mechanics.
Thanks!

im having something similar. clicking around 2 -3 rpm really annoying. i also have a high idle. around 1500 after its warmed up. 00 2.4 sunfire 5 speed. its also difficult to get it in first gear sometimes. i have searched but have not come up with any real result. sorry to jack your post
i got the same prob so any help would be appreciated.
I have that same problem with the high idling, I think at the same RPMs that you mentioned.
This is a bummer. I would like to get some solid info before i go wasting time and money. I don't have enuff of either to waste

. I guess im not alone in this though. Somebody has got to have some info.
those getrag trannys are known for noises. if you wanna read more about it, search the 3rd gen forum about getrag trans
im not really coming up with much in the tranny area. other than how to actually check the fluid in a getrag.lol. any other ideas. i really want to move on to other projects with this car . anymore suggestions are greatly appreciated.
The clutch is self-adjusting. I would start by checking the fluid level in the clutch master cylinder reservoir. Transmission fluid is separate from the clutch fluid and should have nothing to do with improper clutch operation.
Thanks for the suggestion. Can I easily check this reservoir from under the hood?

Yes, the clutch master cylinder fluid reservoir is on the driver's side, on the other side of the firewall from your clutch pedal.
Well I checked the master cylinder fluid reservoir and it was full almost to the cap. The color of the liquid was somewhat murky with some black haze floating in it. On the sides of the opening some of the black gunk had collected there.
Any other suggestions for the clutch? Or for whatever that clicking noise could be?
i dont have a clutch prob, but i checked fluids anyway. its all good whats up with the clicking and the idle. anyone else have a idea?
I would suggest you raise the hood and see if you can determine the source or area of the engine from which the noise seems to originate. If the "clicking" noise appears to be coming from the upper internal part of the engine, it kinda sounds like it could be a faulty hydraulic valve lifter. This sound is usually described as a "ticking" noise which is in sync with the engine rpms. But it could probably be a whole bunch of other things, as well.
Good luck.
I dropped her off at the shop today. I will let everyone know what the problem was.
unless its clicking or tapping at idle i highly doubt its the clutch sounds like head probs to me. if it does tap at idle with car in neutral and clutch pedal not depressed then its gonna be a throwout bearing, but that wont make noise at high rpms

Well, I got a call back from the shop, and here iswhat they said....
1.) There is nothing wrong with my clutch system, so I just need to get used to driving my new car.

2.) The parking brake doesn't work because the rear brakes are worn down to the rivits.

I called the dealership about this one, since they told me that they did a whatever-point safety inspection and spoke with a manager. He said he would check into it and see about paying for new brakes.
3.) That horrible noise in the engine....forgive me for not remembering exactly what it was called that is wrong, but the shop told me that it is something that you would need to rebuild the engine for or install a new engine.

My car is still under warranty, so the dealership should pay for this one though. I called them up and they told me that 01 Cavaliers are notorious for this problem, and that another guy was in and his mechaninc told him that it would run for another 2-3 years like that. That is not what I wanted to hear! My mechanic and the shop here said that he would do his best to make these guys follow through on their warranty.
Any comments or advice?
If it's under warranty then that's my advice.

Sold 6/30/06.
If the noise is coming from the engine, and it gets louder as time goes by and at higher rpm. and if you have the oh so lovely 2.4l (i love it but wow lol) it might be the common, rod bearing going. which then can lead to the rod being thrown. Basicly if thats what it is, you will either need a new engine or a rebuild. I have had it happen 3 times granted the 3 new engines had the problem when i got them but there was not a warrenty on the engine. I hope your noises are not that but it seems to be a very common fault with the 2.4l

clutch chatter.... its a common problem with the getrag trannies. its nothing harmful just obnoxious. its mainly cause the tranny fluid is so thin. if you take it to the dealer like i did i found out all they did was put some foam under some lines i think brake lines and they claim they put a thicker fluid that saturn uses
