I know this has been asked a million times...

I just changed the tranny fluid and the filter in my auto trans 03 sunfire myself tonight, but when I went to fill it up again I noticed there's no frickin' dipstick. I know the capacity for tranny fluid in the car is 9.5 quarts, and I drain rough about 8 quarts out so I put 8 back in. Is there a way to check the level without having to go to a dealer ship? Is there a realease valve in the tranny somewhere that would expel any excess fluid if it is over filled like most cars have?

Well for the cavaliers that dont have a transmission dipstick, Including my 01 cavalier, When I did my filter and fuild change, Their is a overfill bleed valve, In which when the transmission fluid gets close to full it allows the extra fluid to be released.

There's a plug on the tranny that you need to pull and check for fluid coming while the engine run.

Its on the side of the tranny pointing at the oil drain plug, not the plug in the front, its rougly an 11mm or 7/16 sized bolt. With the car running, level, and warm, remove the plug, and let the excess drain out.

My dad had a 2000 Malibu with the 3100, and I assume the same transmission. The dealer told him there's no need to check the fluid level unless it's leaking. Question, unless you can actually see the fluid leaking onto the ground, how can you tell it's leaking fluid if you can't check it? Argh, the wisdom of some of these things..
