timing marks

ok so i have a problem with my car. i was on the highway when the engine just cut out on me. i pulled over and it was smoking. i waited a few minutes. then tried to start it. when i did it would start smoking again. from the passenger side. i tried to see where it was coming from but i couldnt see. so i had it towed to my house. tried to start it but it was real weak then it back fired on me. i thought maybe the timing but i took it apart and its maybe off by less then a half tooth. could that be the problem?

i dont kno what else to think of.

i have like 120k on the car and its a 99 2200 auto

oh ya it wont start at all. i think maybe the reason it was smoking was because the car was starting to run hot as i was pulling over. maybe the over flow for the resivour was leaking anti freeze on the down pipe right where it flexs at. because i looked and the hose is right above it.

i dont know im lost. im usually good at figuring out whats wrong but this has me puzzled.

thanks any help would be much appreciated, nick
