I didnt have a clue where to post this so here goes. Today I drove my car to the store and all was fine.
On the way home it was making a clanging sound and it got louder as theRPMs went up. It did it in park
and neutral also. I went under and it seemed to be coming from the bottom of the engine inside. While
it was in park I gave it some throttle and it starteed to sound like metal grinding and it seized.
The problem is that the engine has 80k miles and I have changed the oil every 2500 since new with synthetic.
I have put too much money and time into keeping from having any problems and do not want to
install another used engine. Would having a rebuild be cheaper than getting a new crate engine.
When I say rebuild I mean fixing whatever was wrong and going through the entire inside and building
it to be ready for a turbo or supercharger. Another option would be possibly putting the supercharged
GTP engine in there if that isnt too much more. Any comments would be appreciated and if anybody
lives in the Tampa Bay area in Florida and knows a good mechanic for this work I need that also.
More specifically I live in New Port Richey. Thanks
I forgot to mention but no check engine lights came on right before this happened.
It did give a P0300, random misfire afterwards though.
The car was a quart low in oil but that has happened every 2500 miles since new.
I was about to change it this week. Oh and there was a smell of burnt oil also
right when I first noticed the sound.
Yeah, welcome to the world of almighty 2.4.. Where either the water pump or the #3 connecting rod takes a shyte.. You're better off yanking it out and finding another engine.. I know junkyards will usually have those engines for a good price too.

Wow, the 2.4 connecting rod problem is that widespread? Is there no preventing this, maybe by overfilling the oil a bit? Are these issues fixed with forged parts?
If you won't miss the power, you could always find a 2200 for dirt cheap or even better an Ecotec. I can vouch for the 2200's reliability.
That's a real shame, 80K is too young to die. I'll be sure to give my 2200's a hug today

there isnt a problem with a connecting rod in the 2.4 that im aware of....its the #3 bearing. being a quart low on iol is a problem...you will have to check it much more often, also, there has to be a problem that is causing you to lose oil...a leak, or you are burning it.
Ill make a sig someday
but a new one i had to replace mine for the most part your gonna find that a rebuilt one cost almost as much as a new engine and does not come with much of a warranty if u buy it new and have a mechanic put it in u get a 3yr warranty on it
