I have a '98 Z24, 2.4L Twin Cam, just rolled over 230 000km recently.
The car was running perfect, A+ until today.
I had ran it for about 45 minutes, then did about 3 or 4 short start/shutdown/startups (running into stores, out and then drive to another store). Everything was fine until I filled it up with fuel. It wasn't running low, just maybe under a quarter tank.
So after filling up I start it and it runs for maybe half a second and shuts itself down. Ok, so I try to get it going a few times.. same deal. Starts then stops. It turns over, it ignites and then dies. I let it sit for about 45 minutes and then went back to it and it started up fine/ran fine. (I still got it towed home just in case)
When I turn the key, I can hear the fuel pump priming or whatever. When it ran I can hear the pump in operation (loud I would imagine, but I don't think its the problem). I checked to see if I had good pressure on the supply line to the injectors, it was good. The ignition system checks out too. The ECU shows no trouble codes. I checked with the code reader eventhough there was no CEL.
So after basic troubleshooting, I am guessing that the ECU is dead. What are your thoughts? When have ECUs on these cars usually died/failed?
(I forgot to highlight "email replies to this thread", so that's what this post is for)
Ok, so I've been reading about PASSlock and such for a bit today.
Anything to immediately troubleshoot if it cuts out and then all of a sudden works?
I replaced the ignition switch right when I got the car.
I'm thinking I should test the PCM with an ammeter to see if it is functional.
Seeing as nobody replied, I'll update my monologue tonight if I fix it or not --> Stay tuned!
