I guess this could be in either this forum or maintence but im not asking HOW to fix something, just whats the problem lol..
OK, oil is leaking from the underside my exhaust cam tower where it meets up at the Timing chain housing on my 2.4L. Now, there is a gasket there, the 4 camshaft bolts are torqued to spec inside the timing housing. The only thing I can think of is when I put my cams in, the engine was out of the car(realizing this as Im typing this) and I could NOT get the exhaust cam gear bolt torqued because it kept spinning(I just tightned it with the socket).. Do you think because the cam is not snugged up against the timing housing as much as it could be when torqued that it could be leaking from there?
Please help me out on this,, thats the only thing I can think of and yes im sure thats where the oil is coming from.
Thanks alot..

sounds like it was striped , so its not tight and is causing a leak
or you put that gasket in backwards , and its causing a leak
^^ Thats another thing, the orange part of the gasket(between the timing housing and the cam tower) Is supposed to face the camshaft tower right? Mine does, just wanna make sure.. Im freakin dreading talking all this off again.

Did you happen to tighten the bolts from the timing chain housing to the cam carrier?
Ender_Wiggin wrote:Did you happen to tighten the bolts from the timing chain housing to the cam carrier?
Sure did, Im going to pull it all apart tomorrow and make sure.. I know when I was putting the motor together I was scared I was gonna crack the aluminum timing housing so I MAY of went easy on the tightning.. I wont this time lol..

Also when you take it all apart make sure to torque that cam bolt. Just put a socket and breaker bar on the crank bolt and hold it so the engine doesn't spin. You should be able to torque it down then. You don't want a cam gear coming loose driving down the road thats for sure.

if its a small leak then its prob just loose
if its a big leak then its prob the gasket is backwards
You can torque it down when there's a bolt in the gear. The same bolt that you have to use when you time the engine.

Well guys, can you believe that I got 4 freakin turns on the torque wrench before the main cam bolt actually torqued down? lol That could be my problem right there huh?
My gasket is in right, its facing the right way.. The orange is facing the cam tower.. So its in correctly.. Hopefully this fixes my leak

Ill keep this updated..
Thanks for the suggestions guys.

was going to say, the cam gear bolt isnt going to tighten anything other then the gear..... otherwise the gear wouldnt turn
are you sure thats where its leaking from? could be the cover to carrier...... but it could also just be a bad gasket.

man that sucks, the cam cover gaskets are a pain in the a$$ because they kept falling out on me for some reason, i have a very tiny leak around mine on the header side, nothing major at all though for me, if mine gets worse then ill change the gasket but until then im leaving it since its such a pain to change the cam cover gaskets.
Also, I forgot to mention.. This is how they tried to get me.. They said it would take 10 labor hours to fix this.. Im like what? I had it apart and back together in 2 hours, how would it take me less time with less resources than you guys have? He was like "well, thats what our tech wrote up" They he said they'll need to change all my gaskets, timing gasket set and water pump set

. I said "uhh sir, the engine has about 3 miles on it, there is no need to buy new gaskets, and the water pump does NOT need to come off to change that gasket between the timing housing and the camshaft" Soo, he was like well, Ill talk to the tech and see if we can re work this price for ya.. That was yesterday, so this morning Im waiting to hear back from them..
Dealerships, I swear.

Dealerships are crooked...... thats why I dont work for one anymore.....
They make their money by upselling.....
Its a very weird place to leak, but I suppose its possible. If I remember correctly, both cam end gaskets (gear side) are the same, one goes forward (orange facing chain cover) one goes backwards (orange facing cams)..... my guess is you put both the same direction, and its not sealing. Matter of fact, almost 100% positive thats what happened.....

^^Brian. I only have 1 gasket for both cams and they are both orange sides are facing the camshaft.. So are you saying I need 2 gaskets on both cams(in between the timing housing and cam)? Regardless, the orange side of the gasket is facing the camshaft.. Thats correct right?

Ahh I just re read what you wrote,, Ok, I understand now 1 gasket for each cam in between the timing housing.. I guess I just need to tighten down the 4 bolts in the timing housing holding the camshaft housing in place.. Thats my only guess as to why its leaking there.. My gaskets are facing the right way, hell my intake cam isnt leaking..

Not sure what type of glue it was but spray or brush the glue on the cleaned cover lay the gasket on and leave it dry for a couple of hours. I've seen this idea used for valve cover gaskets, thought hey cool. I believe it was on HorsePower tv. I think some have used it to hold on the gasket piece that goes between the oil pan an the timing cover on a V8.
I think my intake cam gasket faced the other way? No leaks that im aware of though, went with the way they came out though when i put them back in.
