ok, i've already searched around the org and have determined that my fuel sending unit is bad. my gauge is doing the same floating around process as just about everyone else's was.
so here's my delima. i can't afford to pay someone to do the job for me.
has anyone done it themselves? whats the difficulty level? whats the process? i'm going to unpack my garage stuff tomorrow to find my chilton's manual, but i'd like to know what i'm getting myself in to first...
also, i've looked around all the parts stores in the area and none of them carry a fuel sending unit. is it a dealer specific part or am i not looking in the right places? anyone know where i can find one?
its a 2002 cavalier with a 2.4L...
thanks guys
brian

Sending unit is the same on all 95+ Js (to my knowledge). The tank is held in by 4 bolts/nuts on 2 straps. There are a few miscelaneous things that need to come out before you can drop the tank. The biggest problem is that the tank is heavy, in an akward spot, and full of highly flamable and dangerous fluids and gasses. The sending unit is not hard to switch once you have the tank dropped, you'll figure it out.
I'd give it a 4/5 Wrenches. Not for your average weekender, but not challenge to a real mechanic.
doesn't sound too difficult. nothing a buddy and a few floor jacks can't do. any idea on where i can pick up a unit besides the dealership?

been out of town....
so the junkyard or the dealership is the only place to get the part??? that probably sucks.
GO PATS!!!
can u replace the sending unit or dont u have to put a whole new fuel pump??
everytime i search it comes up as pump/sending unit. so i think its one piece. it doesn't matter though...last night i traded in the cavalier for a 2002 toyota tocoma.
