Interior lights flickering...? Short maybe?
Monday, August 21, 2006 6:02 PM
Hey guys....here's the sit.

Usually I drive with my interior lights dimmed to the lowest setting. Recently my odometer started to dim out and after that I noticed a brightening/dimming fluctuation on my interior lights ( the dash lighting and HVAC controls). My radio is staying the same, so could this be a short in my headlighting system somewhere? It only occurs during the dark hours when I have to have my lights turned on..... I had recently wired my guages up, but have triple checked my connections, including my connection to the headlight? Any ideas? Thanks a ton!

Loose connection, most likely your ground.

Actually funny thing you mentioned the dimmer switch ....becuase the the flickering only occurs when my dash lights are set to the lowest. But as soon as I "increase" the brightness, the flickering goes away, like back to normal. But also I've had my headlight switch replaced before, and it wouldn't suprise me at all if its going now too. so I'm gonna check the ground, then the dimmer, and finally if nothing else the headlight switch. Thanks a gain everyone.

Sounds like a ground, or it may be a little bit of dirt/crap in the swtich. Most of those switches use a variable resistor, lots of "winds" of tiny wire around a shaft. Like the old TV tuners & radio tuners did when they were analog. If you check the grounds and it's still doing it, you might pop the swtich out and spray the inside with some electrical cleaner spray. Ya know, it's a dirty world out there.
