Stupid but simple question. Can I buy a serpentine belt for a non-a/c model and just by-pass the compressor? I have A/C on my car, 98 Cavalier 5 spd 2.2L, but the compressor is locked up or the clutch is bad. I dont need a/c and my belt needs replaced soon anyway. I would like to just buy the the non a/c belt instead of worry about the a/c clutch burning a new belt up but not sure of the belt path. Any suggestions would be great. I know there is a bypass pulley I can buy but I would like to keep all the a/c stuff in the car incase i sell it. Maybe the next person would pay to get it all fixed.

it's not too expensive or hard to replace. takes a little bit of time. any parts store should have one, a chilton's book walks you through most of it.
if you care about the warranty then they ask you to replace the Compressor, Evap/dryer and the orifice tube and to have the system flushed... or you can just rip it out.

yes, you can use a belt from a non a/c car. not sure on a 2000 where it is, but in the engine bay there should be a little decal that shows the exact routing of the belt.essentially, it will be the same route, just without going around the a/c pulley.
