hey guys, i searched through the posts on odometers but couldnt get an exact answer....i have a 98 sunfire GT with a DIGITAL odometer....it is dead (meaning it doesnt light up) and im going to swap in another cluster....my question is being a digital odometer, do i have to have a mechanic set the mileage? or does it reset it on its own once its connected? Thanks.
if it is new enough the milage is stored in the BCM, it may take a Tech 2 to get the new cluster working tough.
i think i heard that a 00+ the Odometer is stored in the BCM. In order to set the correct mileage u need to use a Tech 2.
I think pre 00's the mileage is stored in the cluster itself.....But don't quote me on any of this, just trying to see if anyone can remember enough to correct me...

that pretty much what I'm thinking but I work on so many of them I can't see to remember neither
anyone know for sure?

i dont want to replace it and i screw up my odometer mileage.... but when it WAS working the numbers were all garbled up on occassion, then the light would go, id smack it and it would work, now it doesnt light up at all and i can barely see it at all....but i dont want to ruin it by replacing the cluster and getting incorrect mileage, and i dont know a thing about soldering in a new bulb or what was mentioned in other posts regarding this issue....
maybe find a friend who can replace the bulb for u....that way if it works properly then u can retain the same mileage.
I do believe that the 98 clusters retain the mileage in the cluster and the 00+ are in the BCM. So you only option would be to replace the cluster out of a 98 and get the mileage reset, which is a lot of hassle for a bulb.
I would find someone who can solder and try to replace the bulb first.

yes, pre 2000's store the mileage directly in the cluster.
thanks guys, guess i will have to find someone who can solder a new bulb in for me...
If sunfires are the same as cavs as far as the cluster bulbs, it's very easy to replace the odo bulb. I've done it on mine (98 cav).
jsut replace the bulb, easy as pie

anyone know what type/size of bulb i need to get?
Listening in since mine is out as well....and since my gas gauge doesn't work my mileage is my only way of knowing how much gas I have.
anyone who has done this before, can you please tell me what kind of bulb i need to get??? i dont want to take the cluster out, find out, put back together, drive to get it, come back and take apart again....please
