Fuel issue, I think.....
Sunday, July 23, 2006 5:13 PM
Hey all,

I guess ill start from the beginning. every once in a while my car would act like it had issues getting fuel. like it would fire and run for 2-3 seconds and die, but then it would go back to normal. It did that every 6 months or so. then it stated to get worse, it would happpen every month, then finally it just gave out. I figured it was the fuel pump and when going to buy a new one i discoverd that the wiring harness has a tendency to burn up, so i replaced that. I thought great the pump turned on!!!! but still wont run. like if i pump the gas pedal it will kind of run, but not well enough to drive. The pump is turning on I can here it. what on earth could be wrong with it? any body with any ideas?

Check the basics first...

*are you getting spark?
* Remove your air ducts from the throttle body. If the car runs, the air ducts are either blocked or your air filter is plugged.
* Pull a spark plug. Is it worn or totally effed up?

Were you getting a cel before it died?

one, yes i have spark, because it will fire up fine, two i just replaced the air filter with a K & N, and the spark plugs are relatively new...so i dont think that could be the problem. and what do you mean by CEL? thanks for the reply BTW\

oops, i know what a cel is, and yes i was, but not anything odd, it was from when i got rid of my catalytic converter so the o2 sensors werent reading right, and i dont think that should affect it.

1. The fuel pump runs for 2-3 seconds fed by the ECM. A separate +12volts from 2.)

2.The engine turns over, generates oil pressure and changes over it's contacts to keep the engine running which it should do until you switch off the ignition or the oil pressure fails.

This +12volts is from the Ignition switch, through the fuel pump fuse and then through the changed over oil pressure switch contacts.

Maybe you are loosing 2. intermittantly, as you seem to always be able to start for 2-3seconds. (I assume there are no theft systems involved, some cut the fuel after 2-3seconds)

Try removing the Fuel Pump fuse and cleaning the contacts with a Scotch Brite type pad, then replace the fuse and try again-sounds nuts but has fixed problems before!
(A bad contact between the fuse holder and fuse)

Also, as John says, the cel may be on for a reason other than cat

Have you checked your fuel filter? I had a similar problem on a non J car, turned out to be the filter.
good luck

Yes i replaced the filter when i rewired the fuel pump, and the relay is switching on and off, so i dont think its that. I also dont think that there is a seperate fuse for the fuel pump, and the ECM fuses are fine....i also bled the lines, and checked for pressure, which there is none. i think it must have just died. i really have no way of checking the cel...unless i tow it somewhere which i dont have the money for, and no theres no theft system. if you have anyother ideas though it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Are you SURE there is no separate Fuel Pump Fuse?

there is a fuse in the car. It is labeled as F/P / INJ i think. It's a 15 amp fuse.

first off your car has pass lock from the factory, if their is a fault the car will run for a few seconds then stall. The PCM shuts of the fuel pump if something looks wrong.

second your pump is fused witht he injector and other component of the fuel system, not singal fuel pump fuse its too new.

an easy check would be for power and ground at the pump. IF you have both you need a new pump if not you have another problem.
