well i dont know whre to begin ive pissed with it for 2 days straight i finally put my 2.4L in, this was a direct swap (i have a (z24) i got an engine from a 2001 grand am..
anyway i got it on and running idles like crap..
from my old engine i switched the
throttle body with all sensors that i KNOW work
i have every plug plugged in except for knock sensor, and egr (2001 doesnt have one of course) knock sensor i unplugged after the problem..
i put new plugs new boots
new oil new coolant
before i ever started it
here is the MAIN thing : When full throttle it will run like crap go to about 3500 and stay there not move.
at 3/4 throttle it will run better and go to redline
i was throwing a CEL for injector open circuit but i made sure they were tight and reset it, it hasnt been on since
i cant figure out what is wrong thats really the only symptoms i can think of, it almost wants to die when idleing it almost sounds like a vacuum line
( i DONT have vaccum line for AC compressor selenoid to throttle body) dont think it makes much different
i was going to pull the plugs tomorrow to see if the gap is correct but would a spark plug gap make it that bad? there ac delco platinums thought they came gappd perfect who knows ill check
other then plugs im lost this thing is irritating me terriably
i switched injectors from my 96 onto the 2001, i switched throttle bodies, exhaust manifolds, knock sensor, and upper mount.
ANY HELP IS APPERCIATED
and at idle, it sounds kind of noisy from the crank case also..
nothing to do with knock sensor its not even plugged in, anyone else?
With the '96 ignition controls, and no knock sensor to go with it,
I believe the ignition retards....
You probably can't do without it....
i doubt it because u can have the knock sensor just zip tied to the engine without a problem
check you coil cover, if u have a black one, get a white one. black ones are junk. also check the O rings on all ur injectors
injectors r good.. they came off my old engine as well as the IDI cover off my old engine i have no idea
A knock sensor also a peizoeletric sensor senses vibertaion. In the case of a car, detonation.
Missing a knock sensor and/or having afaluty one will retarted the timing as much as 15 degrees, ATDC.
I would first fix your knock sensor problem then go from there.
- 2004 Cavalier - 124k, owned since new
theres not a problem with knock sensor i tapped the hole in the block screwed the old one in.. and plugged it in still same problem
did you have a waterpump done? sounds like timing is off. noise could be a non reset tensioner...
what is the compression? 150 across all 4 is low, regardless if GM says, "it's fine" bastards

Wait, you said vacuum for AC compressor solenoid to throttle body, that's not what that is. The vacuum line that goes to the solenoid on the AC compressor is actually the EVAP canister purge solenoid, has nothing to do with the AC.
tensioner was not putting any tension.. also timing was off by a tooth.. fixed it engine runs perfect

minus egr code for 2001 engine
^^How did you figure out your timing was off? Im having similar problems with my 2.4 swap.. Stupid erratic idle.

so that was the problem???? the tensioner wasn't reset? awesome! congrats man. when that thing is not tight, your chain can slap and chattered, and skip teeth, giving poor idle, no power, and terrible fuel milage. And lots of black smoke
