ok heres whats going on... i'm almost sure i know i bent a ton of valves but maybe i'm not thinking of something

the timing chain on my eco snapped... i replaced it set timing.. wouldnt fire...

turns out i was 180 off (i think)

re set timing... it fires but only if i hold wot and it doesnt go over 1,100 rpm...

checked compression reads as follows

0-0-0-170

bent valves? or is my timing possibly off?

i really dont want to pull the head if i dont have to... so i'm just making sure i didnt overlook something here

but i'm almost sure its valves

Seems to me something is up with the cyl head valves could possibly something up with the pistons as well. Only way to find out is to take cyl head off to inspect. Alot of damage could be done when the timing chain breaks.

Good Luck

I believe the eco is an interfernce engine. So when the timing chain broke the valves made friends with the pistons. So bent valves and notches in the pistons.

A timing chain oiler nozzle design change was recommended for this

engine for the 2002 and 2003 models.....

There's a service bulletin, so you'll need to see a dealer....

On this forum (J Bodies Organization) about 3 years ago, there were

posters that reported broken timing chains with the early ecotecs....

The remedy was the improved timing chain oiling that I mentioned...

Do what you want. All I was saying, there is a "fix"....

The factory service bulletin should be available at all Chevy, Pontiac,

and Saturn dealers....

damn that sucks man. ive heard stories bout the timing chains. i know a guy with an 04 classic that snapped his at 68k miles. well he got lucky, only broke 1/2 of the link, he heard alot of nisoe and shut it down right away. no danage other thqn replacing the chain. luvky bastard. im at 67k and hoping im one of the lucky ones. i only need to amke it to tax time and the whole timing set is getting replaced. anyhow...with this bulletin about the early engines is it safe to say that GM has mostly corrected the problem in the 04-05 models?

yeah.. funny thing is i bout the 02 so i wouldnt have to drive the 03...

the 02 broke down, and now i have been driving the 03.. yup snapped an airstrut

so now 2 cars that are both busted..

ive done a local serch and it seems i can buy a complete head for cheaper than rebuilding the one i have.. so i might just go pick one up slap it on and hope for the best...

then ill have an extra hed i can rebuild and p&p for the 03 i guess
