Multifunction Switch
Saturday, July 29, 2006 3:29 PM
My blinkers and brake lights have decided to crap out. From the research I've done it seems as the though the multifunction switch is the culprit. Can anyone tell me how to find it and replace it on a 99 Cavalier? I'd appreciate any help. Thanks.

Youre brake light switch could be broken, Even youre bulb contacts could have corrosion, That could be conflicting the power connection.

would the brake light switch cause my blinkers to stop working too? From what I've read on this forum and other sites on the net when both of these happen at the same time the multifunction switch is usually the problem. Thanks.

From what I've read at work you need to de-activate the air bag, remove the steering wheel, then the switch. And then reverse to put things back on. I need to do it to my car yet, I just haven't got a steering wheel puller.

You dont have to pull the bag or remove the wheel. Just pull the column covers undo the connector and remove the screws fastening it.

Are you sure? I read on Mitchell at work that you had to. Is it honestly that easy?

you need to pull the air bag because there is a large nut under it connecting the steering wheel to the steering column which you pull then you attach the steering wheel puller and it threads onto and pushes off the column

3 screws that hold the cover on, and 2 torx that hold the switch on. I never pulled my wheel to get to the switch. I dont even think GM says to in SI.

I did mine tonight! No need to pull the steering wheel I stand corrected.
The bottom bolt on the switch I had to use a 7mm wrench because i couldn't get a screwdriver on it though.

So all you had to do was pull the covers off and the screws just like he said?

Yes, people doubt me all the time. I worked in GM dealers for 7 years and own 2 Cavs. I know enough.

yeah I looked at it a while ago when I replaced the steering wheel in my Fire with an aftermarket and said hmm that would be a pain to change.

Then I had to do it and after reading this second guessed myself. But its really simple takes about 5 mins. Happy I actually checked and didn't just argue as I would feel like an ass now haha.
