Gas gage messing up

Ok well i just started to notice recently that my gas gage is messed up, when i go up hills it goes below empty and flashes "check gages" then downhill it sometimes goes up higher, and it only gives a correct reading on flat ground, i was almost positive that newer vehicles had something that would prevent this from happening. I know its nothing terrible and stuff but its anoying looking down and getting a heart attack cuz im below empty and like 20min from home lol.

Usually cars come equipped with the floating sensor in them that usually translates that they have that constant gas supply but I don't think J's came with that. I can only say that because I notice the same things in many cases with my cav and my girls fire. It's nothing I'd worry about, just get used to it, and stop running so close to E

2k+ j-bodies have a common problem for the gas gauge to read incorrect. What it is is the the fuel level sensor get coated from something in the gas (apparently shell gas is causes this if i remember correctly) and basically it doesnt read the right level. It happened to me. 40 for a new level sensor, a few hours to drop tank and voila, fixed.

But when i happened, i was like 'wow, 30okm and still have over a half tank of gas'. Then it would do weird things and i realized when i filled up that it was almost bone dry.

My '99 hasn't had a functioning gas gauge for over 3 years now. It reads close to a full tank after 250 miles, but shows half a tank after 50 miles. Go figure. I just fill it up every 300-325 miles.
