Well, my compressor is dying on my 04 cavy. This suxs. I only have 28k miles on the car, but it is not covered due to reconstructed title. (I like to buy rebuilds, they are half the price of regular cars). I am really surprised the a/c went so soon. It has worked great the past year. The Comp makes a bad metallic noise (almost like an OHV timing chain) when the A/C is turned on. I think I am going to grab a used one. Looks like there are two different styles on the 04. You have the older style 02-04 and the newer style 04cavy-cobalt. I always end up with transition year car. Just venting. Anyone else have their compressor fail early in the cavy's life?

The one in my 2000 Cavi is still working well, it will freeze you out. I use it a lot since I live in the hot and humid South. It makes more noise now than when new, but I'll continue to use it until it croaks.
After about 8 or 9 years a gm compressor is on borrowed time, but after only a couple seems ridiculous. After I put my lower motor mount on I could hear my compressor when I turned on the AC. Don't know if its freak occurrence or resonating through to the firewall after the stiffer mount. Still works though
FYI I think my car is in the transition year. A lot of websites don't even think my car exists...

Fail early? My '99 just finally failed this year with 120k miles on it. Can't complain.

$20 gasket and a recharge and good as new.
What gasket are you talking about? The compressor is still OK though?
Mine just lost the shaft seal which allowed the freon to leak out. Got that replaced and all has been good for 4 months. It is a PITA to do though...I pulled the compressor myself and took it to my buddy at the dealership who replaced it for me. You have to have 3 or 4 special tools to get down in there. Or at least you need those tools to make you not want to throw it against the wall. Hopefully it will hold out for another year or two.
You can find used compressors for cheap. I bought a compressor for my '99 Z from a guy on here that was deleting his A/C. Got it for $50.

My A/C will still freeze me, but it is noisy. I am just going to run it until it dies out. Heck, I have weird sounding GM stuff to last 2-3 years before it actually died. I will be getting one from a junkyard, ebay, or off the classifieds here. I am just gonna wait till it is dead. It may be the clutch, those are replaceable if so. Mine is the style that has the one bolt between the 2 lines. Apparently it is the newer style 2004.5+ eco compressor.
