John Higgins- 2.2 ohv-2200 swap
Monday, July 24, 2006 6:09 PM
K so since i have seen people have lots of advice about this,
I have a 1995 cavfire 5 speed 2.2l 235,000km's and my friend has a totalled 2002 sunfire 2200 auto 79,000kms.
can someone tell me any problems i might have other than having to hardwire the injector harness and some other minor wirings being in different places from the 2 motors?
is auto motor going to 5 speed car gonna make a difference? I dont think it will but gm has been known to do some stupid things so im just making sure, and roughly how long has it taken anyone to do this swap?
thanks your help is greatly appreciated

if i'm not mistaken isn't a '95 OBD I and 2002 OBD II? I don't know if it's really swappable?

The 95 2.2 were OBDI

An Engine is not OBDI or OBDII. You can run a 92 2.2 with a 2002 2.2 Ecm. Like you can run a 2.2 with a 2.3 Ecm.

OKay there are a few things you need to do if your gonna do this swap, i already did it.

1) You need to re-wire your UART (tan communication wire comming out of the inside of your car, this wire sends data for passlock ect to the ecm) data link wire. its in a different spot on the junction box by the firewall.
2) if you have a late model 1995 cav your have a theft system on it. If its a earlier model youll have problems with the theft system, itll keep cutting out the injectors when you try to start it. Two things you can do here is reprogram your ecm to think its a 1995 ecm without theft , or you can reprogram your ecm to a 2000 2.2L but when they program it have them turn the theft off. They cant uninstall it but they can turn it off. One thing though if you reprogram the ecm to a 1995, you have problems with the engine running properly. The 1995 uses a vaccum controlled EGR valve, and from 1996 and up were all electronically controlled. Maybe some issues with that.
3)The fuel lines (feed and return) need to be changed

* you can still use the same lower rad hose and upper just need to be modified abit by cutting them abit shorter. Same goes with the power steering lines you can use the same ones.*

4) Throttle cabble will need to be changed.
5) The 5 speed tranny you have will fit the 2000 block no problems there just make sure the re-machine your flywheel before installed your clutch and pressure plate.
6) the two coolant hoses running through the firewall at the back of the engine will need to be changed.
7) If you have AC youll need to change the line going from the reciever/dryer to the compressor, because if you use your 1995 you'll find that it runs into your belt because the 2000 lines is shaped differently.

And thats about it.
Hope this helps
