I was helping a friend work on his brakes on his 97 cav and neither of us have jackstands so we said "aww screw it, there isn't much chance of the car falling off the jack just doing brakes"................WRONG...the damned car fell off of the jack twice. once causing the hood to fall off the prop rod and almost crushed my friends fingers. needless to say after we were done, he went and got a set of jackstands for the next time.
so lesson learned....the car can fall off the jack, and it can do it easily, so please, don't do maintenance without proper support for the car

I'm not sure what the weight distribution is on a Cavi, but I'm sure if it landed on your leg it would be 100% at that exact point.

About 6 years ago, an acquaintance of mine was doing work on his car w/out jackstands... in fact it was just to replace a pin that came out of his shifter linkage on his old Nova (and in a grocery store parking lot even)... something that he did many times before. He wasn't sure what the problem was... the pin was replaced numerous times, the endlink on the cable as well. Even dropped the tranny to change the part where it hooked to... no luck. Every so often it would pop out.
Well, the car fell off the jack while he was
under the car.
He lived (barely), but had to spend about 3-4 months in the ICU with massive head trauma. His family damn near went bankrupt w/ all the medical bills.
Do it right the first time, or back away from the vehicle.

I don't really trust jack stands. Even though i'v never seem them fail i'm still iffy about them. I feel much safer with a 16x16" blocks of wood.
Just a reminder to yall who like to use ramps..... ALWAYS chock the tires BOTH directions. Back in high school, I pulled my camaro up on ramps to do a tranny filter change. Somehow I accidentally knocked the car out of gear and the car rolled off the ramps. I was on a creeper with my feet sticking out the front of the car (luckily). The car came down on my chest and pulled me halfway down the driveway till the wheels of the creeper got stuck in the relief crack in the slab and the car pulled itself off of me and into the street. I ended up with bruised ribs and several lacerations and the rest of the feelings associated with being run over...lol. I laugh about it now, but I also dont take chances anymore. I got really lucky.... some cant say the same. Just remember to take all possible precautions, you never know what can happen.

hell when i work at dodge i had a lift-phobia yeah their cool and you can walk completely under the car but i always felt wierd under one. and knowing if it did fall and he safety latches didn't work i'm 100% screwed
Well mikec2003 I think you were brave and honest and I can see the object of your post was to highlight the danger to others.
I recall a tragic tale of a guy who went out on a Sunday morning and started an oil change on a grassed area. When his wife went to call him in for lunch he was crushed fatally under the car. Jack, or stands as well, were not specified but the supporting system had sunk into the grass.

A couple months ago my Dad was working on his S10 and he had it on ramps with in the front with wood blocks behind the rear wheels and somehow it rolled off the ramps and landed on him. He was pinned under the truck for a couple minutes while he yelled for his buddy to come help.
He still doesn't have full use of his right shoulder/arm.
Yup, always a good idea to make sure the car is properly supported. Hear, hear!
I've had my share of close calls.... never again. Now I have proper ramps, blocks, stands, heavy duty jacks, etc.... doing it cheap will catch ya sooner or later.

Jack stands can fail too.. I had my old capri on jack stands.. I was wrestling with a rusty bolt that was holding the gas tank to the car.. One yank, and I noticed the jack at the front was starting to slip.. I yelled as the car was starting to fall on me. My friend grabbed my legs and pulled.. just as the car came crashing down. I never been so scared in my life..

i don't know, but im done now, its not worth the impending ban. and besides, ive said what i need to say already, that its pretty messed up to try to talk crap to someone who knows they did wrong and are just trying to inform others before they make the same mistake and injure themselves
