I was talking to a few J body owners in town and I mentioned the noise in my engine, how it's loud on startup then fades as the engine warms up. One guy mentioned that it could be piston slap. Anyone know about this? I should record a video with my camera just to show you people here the noise it makes when it's cold. If it is piston slap then I'm not going to worry, just gotta take it easy on the car til it's warmed up.
Jason, usually what might be thought as piston slap in our
engines turns out to be chain slap...
Here's what the ny j bodies club reports :
"some aftermarket tensioners that will hold tension as long as the oil is hot, but they relax and lose their tension each time the engine cools off.
This allows the chain to slap on the plastic guides every time the engine is started cold and usually leads to a premature failure of the tensioner and chain. If you have problems with the timing components on this engine, check the tensioner first."
first of all, do u have a 22 or a 2.4? if it's a 2.2, there is no timing chain tensioner, if its a 2.4, then:
f that's the case, i would reccomend replacing the tensioner with a mechanical spring tensioner as opposed to a hydraulic tensioner
