This is my only car as of now and if i miss too many days at work i'll lose my job.
'91 cavalier. 3.1 v6. 100K miles. When i left work today, i turned the key. nothing. held it a second longer, and car instantly starts up. I drove 20 miles to the store, turned off the car, went inside, came back, car wouldnt start. tried cranking it again, no cranking sound from the starter, all my interior lights/radio are on, and all i hear is a small "click". each time i turn the key over it makes that one "click" sound.
Its not the battery, i went to walmart to install a new one, and it does the same thing. Whats wrong with my car?

sounds like a bad connection between your batt and starter..take the leads off and clean them on both sides...phil
This car isn't listed in your registry.
If it's a manual, does it work when you push the clutch a little harder? Might be the switch at the clutch.
If it's an auto, try jiggling the shifter if it doesn't start and then trying again. It might be the sensor telling it that it's in park.
Could also be a bad connection. The click could be the relay engaging and then nothing is happening.
try this if its manual put it in neutral with the emer brake on turn the key to start position , pop the hood , touch the connections on the starter with a jumper wire that will get you to work you can always just put a button temporarily , It could be connection but my guess is starter or ignition switch that is the culprit.
Im sorry i didnt mention its an automatic.
I took it to a shop and he found that my battery terminal connections were stripped!! How the %^*& could someone do that??
Hopefully its something small, because i would like to save $80+ on the starter i just bought.
