ok to start off im a noob. now i just got the car at my house today and i went to change the battery terminals since they are shot and i noticed that the starter motor is gone. (i got this car for free from my dad's friend) but i noticed that some gears are exposed and they seem a bit rusty. what are those gears and second is it bad that it will cost me alot to fix those gears? or can i spray it wit silicon or wd40? also if i got to a junk yard and get a starter motor would it be easy to install? thanks.

Sounds like the gears you are describing is the flexplate, as long as teeth are not missing and you do not see any cracks you are probably ok.. Replacing the starter is not that difficult, Only 2 bolts to hold it in and I believe 3 wires that need to be connected. Hope this helps

This would be really helpful if you would post pic's up of what you are talking about if you are able. This way there is no guess work to this.
