Is it bad to mix oil weights?
Wednesday, July 12, 2006 10:35 PM
Just as the topic says. Would it be bad to mix say 3 quarts of 10w-30 oil with 1 quart of 5w-30 from the same company? I know the weights aren't that far off, but I just thought I'd see what everything thinks.

As long as you don't change brands it shouldn't hurt.

Nothing to worry about, the engine won't notice a difference.

it just changes the viscosity a bit...why you would run 10w30 when the car is sposed to have 5w30 or want to make the oil the car is supposed to have thicker is beyond me, but hey, if you are too cheap to pay 2 bucks for another quart of the same viscosity of oil, more power to ya.

It's just a question smart ass. I own 3 cars and not EVERY car is "supposed" to have 5w30 oil. There are a ton of people who switch to 10w30 in the summer months even though their car recommends 5w30. If you look in your cavaliers manual it will also specify that 10w30 is acceptable in warmer climates. The only reason I ask is that I have a couple quarts of 5w30 left from when I had the cav and instead of wasting it... I just wanted to know if it would be bad to put it in with the other. As for the crack at my financial status, you know absolutely nothing about me and I would appreciate it if you would not jump on my post with smart ass remarks. Wouldn't 3 quarts of 10W30 and 1 quart of 5W30 make a crankcase full of 8.75W30?

As long as it's good oil, I don't think it'll matter. I had an 86 cav that burned about a quart a month, bad valve seals. Since the car was a POS, I stopped changing the oil and just added "recycled oil" from Amoco. At the time it was .75 a quart, and I hated the car so it didn't matter. It ran like that for another 3 years, I couldn't kill it. When the chassis finally rusted out enough, I did the WOT drive to reverse to drive about 20 times, trying to kill it before the junkyard truck got there, and it wouldn't die. Fried the front tire, but still idled like a kitten and didn't knock.

I wouldn't lose any sleep over mixing grades of oil.

^^^ kinda along the same lines i was leaving work one night and this kid in an explorer from philly decided he'd had enough to drink so he wanted to play chicken w/ anyone he saw. well, i saw him headed for me, got into the other lane, he got in front of me again, so i ended up hittin a parking separator island as he drove off after looking me right in the eye and i never saw him again. destroyed my oil pan, separated it from the front main, and it leaked i would say an average of 2 quarts every three days. i ended up just buying the cheapest oil i could find since it didn't stay in the engine long enough to matter... once i finally changed the pan and gasket, the car never ran better... almost like running clean oil through it for a few months cleaned it out or something...

With a 'few' miles on my '96 2.2, I'm running 10w-30 in the summertime, and 5w-30 in the winter. I may go with 10w year round if oil consumption stays dropped to almost nil. With 5w, I loose about a quart between oil changes. 10w, less than half that.

sorry i was a bit snappish bud. i have serviced cars for the last 5 years or so at differant dealerships and quicklube places, i just get tired of people that want to put thicker oil in their cars than what its supposed to run on...lots of people will come in and want 15w40 in their little honda,lol...i guess i just took my frustrations out on you again, my apoligies.

i run 10w30 quakerstate 100% synthetic i my car year round. it runs and starts pretty good in the winter. ya i have mixed oils before like 10 and 5w30 and has never been a problem. but only accidently when i forgot what the heck i was running in the car.

quaker state... *shudder* i dont know about the synthetic but when i was an oil monkey at the dealership people who ran quaker all their car's life had massive wax deposits on the oil fill cap same with penzoil *gasp*

I have almost 200K on my Toyota. I always try to have a quart of 10W-40 during the summer to top the oil off if needed, and a quart of 10W-30 in the winter. I'll top off with whichever viscosity I have on hand during the summer, but I usually try to top off with 10W-30 in the winter. I stay away from the ultra-cheap mystery brand oils, and Pennzoil.

That is the first time I have heard of problems with Quaker State. I might have to check deeper into that. I stay away from Pennzoil due to the deposits/buildup it leaves behind, according to two friend sources.

Either Quaker State is owned by Penzoil, or vice versa. All one company. On another note, been using Penzoil virtually exclusively with no waxy buildup anywhere. In fact, with regular oil changes, no depsits of anything anywhere. Yes, I have seen the internals. Everything looks about like they did at around 3K miles.
