When my 97 2.4 is running and the oil cap is off, I get puffs of air out of the timing cover. Is this normal or am I going to be replacing the head soon?
I don't have oil in the dexcool, or dexcool in the oil.

mines does this as well, thought mine has high compressions pistons, this is usually caused by bad rings or vavle seals, or a bad PCV system. this symptom is called "Blow By"
Bummer. I can blow air through the air seporator, so that's not clogged. I've had a compression test and passed, so it sounds like I need valve seals, huh?

i wouldnt be too crazy bout it. allot of cars have sum pressure comin out of the ol fill cap.
It should be normal, the car is pumping oil into the timing cover to lube the chain.... The puff you feel is physics, just the air escaping, nothing more.
Out of curiousity... why are you running the car with the oil cap off? It's supposed to be on there...
Are there any actual problems with the car? (When the oil cap is on, that is)

The only problem I have is the dreaded rough idle, and I'm over $2000 in parts trying to fix that.
I had a lot of gunk in the throttle body, so after I removed and cleaned it, I noticed that there was a lot of oil residue in the air duct from the oil seporator. So I plugged the hole in the air duct, got a longer hose and routed the oil seporator hose to the air box, before the air filter. It's still going into the intake, but now it's filtered first.
I wanted to make sure I didn't kink the new hose, so I blew air through with the oil cap off and it's clear. That's how this whole thing started. I don't normally run without the cap, but I didn't know if puffing was normal or if I had a cracked head.
