Just wondering what the service life runs on this unit given proper maintenance?
BTW... How many quarts to do a pan drop/filter change?

Well at 178K miles, i say mines still going well. Every 10K miles or so i replace the fluid and new filter.
That's a ton. If I get to 120K without a rebuild I feel that is doing real good. If that is the original trans with mileage that has to be a record!

As long as you baby it, and do the proper maintance, everything will last forever.
im sure you dont believe me but my 400k sunfire still has the original 3 speed as long as you take care of it and dont beat on it it lasts the life of the car

400,000 miles on an original trans? Did the engine make it that far too? I never knew a Chevrolet product could be so good. That's better than a Honda!
1995 Cavalier 2.2 Liter Auto With 64k Miles
yea way better than a honda and yea still the original engine all depends on how well you take care of it and uh i dunno about the 2.4's anybody wanna chime in on the life of those? the 2.2 is a tough as hell engine (cant believe gm built something better than ford engine wise for lifespan it even outclasses the escort's 1.9 l!!!)
OMG! You have 400,000 miles on the engine too? Unrebuilt pieces? I HAVE NEVER heard of ANYTHING GM built going that long. As a matter of fact I am on the Honda boards and never heard of a Honda anything going over 300,000. I am hoping to get 200,000 or so out of my 2001 Civic but know every 100,000 I will need to at least do the belt and water pump. Trans is a crap-shoot since most go at 100,000. I only have 41,000 miles now though so I have many years before that crops up.
Using Synthetics?

I just tried to make some correlation with these numbers...
I am 35 and have been driving since I was 16. Even at 20,000 miles every year I have been driving that is still only 380,000 miles. How long is your commute? That's a ton of miles!
How many timing chains and water pumps to go 400,000 miles?
It would be interesting to see your list of things you had to replace. Only one other car I know went about that much and it was a Benz diesel.

meh, my old LN2 with a 3spd auto was flogged hard. it was a rental car for the first 15k miles of its life, then my dad abused it for another 35k miles, he is very rough on automatics....then, i bought the car. after some bolt ons to the engine and driving thecar hard(at that time i was 17 and thought i was speedracer), the transmission dropped 2nd gear at 60k miles. the transmission was rebuilt and i had nothing but problems...stay away from cottman transmission, lol. my bother in law has the car now, he has put 25k more miles since the rebuild on it, and its going strong.
from what i have heard other people say, if you take care of it, the 3spd will last you quite some time!
even with being a flogged rental car and a dad who drops from reverse to drive while the car is still rolling backwards without letting off the gas, it still lasted for 60k miles,lol...
My friend has a three speed that is still going strong at 130K. My boss dropped her three speed twice over the car's life, so it depends on a lot. Supposedly the 3 speed is stronger than the 4 speed and my 4 speed (which spent its first 50K as a rental car) is doing fine at 96K. The transmission pan was sludgy at 70K and those who curse out their transmissions for failing at 100K probably never flushed them. If you haven't flushed yours in the last 50K, DO IT.

i was told by the dealer the fluid in my tranny can go for 100K befor it needs to be changed. i
That's what my dad's garage said, and they made quite a bit off his busted transmission. Listen to the service/owner's manual, not the dealers. Don't ever listen to anyone who stands to profit from your losses!

it could, but if you do really hard driving, do you want a 100K mile filter? At which point even at 50K miles it needs to be changed. Its not hard. Unbolt one corner of the tranny pan, loosen all the other bolts, tilt the pan the drop the fluid. Close eyes. open your eyes once in a while to check and see how much is left. After its all drained. Pull rest of tranny pan off. Clean off old gasket. Replace filter, and clean off any other gunk. Put new gasket on, bolt up Tranny pan. Tq to spec. And now refill with new fluid.

My 3 spd. auto has over 200K.
The only problem I have with it is when the fluid gets dirty, the TCC lockup solenoid kicks in & out a lot. I end up having to change the fluid out every 10-15K miles because of that.
I usu. use about 6 qts. of tranny fluid when I chg. it.

lol thats because HONDAS SUCK! lol anyways yea, i am using the original unrebuilt parts though soon im gonna need to replace my final drive because my g/f is a dumb cunt and felt she had to take my car joyriding and spin the tires around 20 or so times, while im in there i might as well buy a overhaul kit with the new friction discs and gaskets and other goodies to keep her goin good only thing that aint stok in the tranny is the filters and the fluid satisfied?
