Windows only going half way DOWN.

Ok... I really did a search and cant find whats wrong with my power window. I'm not having problems like other people where it goes up every couple of inches over a period of time. when I first had this problem, my window was half way down and wouldnt go up. When I make it go up, it stays at half way and makes like a noise that sounds like its stuck(if I hold it down for a few sec sounds like a machine gun). hope you guys get what I meant by that.
Anyway.. I let the window all the way down(went down no problem). then try to get it back up.. only went half way and made the same noise.. so I pulled the door panel off and helped it up... here and there it made that machine gun noise. now its all the way up... But now I CANT GET IT HALF WAY DOWN!!! if I try to go past the half way, it makes that cranking machine gun noise. so I roll it all the way up and the button is still press down, it makes that noise again when it is fully closed...

sounds like something is not moving or stuck. I read people said its off track, but I dont know whats off track? I cant see anythign thats off track. I see the metal X that makes the window goes up and down but nothing seems off track... I dont think its the motor b/c its cranking(making that noise) and now it just cant go half way down...

any help would be appreciated.

the motor has probably been replaced before and is loose now. when the motor is replace you have to drill out the rivets. when i replace the motor in my moms 99 cav i couldn't find big enough rivets, so i held it in with cable ties. if i held the switch even a second too long when it was up i would get the "cranking machine gun noise"

try playing with the motor see if its loose, if it is buy a new window motor with regulator. the regulator is the steel track.

if its not do you have after market speakers in the doors? the glass/ regulator could be hitting them.

also one more thought. was the regulator damaged in any way? even if it slightly bent it will throw off the function of the windows.

hope this helps you out man.

Um you know you dont need ritets you can bolt it in place?

Also, it sounds like the motor is dieing. You have 2 choices. Replace the motor, of just lube the tracks and hope to high hell it works.

ok.... I got to play with it today. this is what happens. Window is all the way up now. when press to go down, it goes about 1/3 of the way and gets stuck. The motor still runs(the driver side has auto window till it goes all the way down). I have to push it a bit so it catches, then it will go all the way down and then the motor stops also.

Now the window is all the way down. when pushed to go up, it goes up about 4inches or so then gets stuck and makes that cranking noise. To help it move up, I have pull the window up about 2 inches to get it to catch again. when I pull it up 2 inches and press the button to go up, it will go up about 3/4 all the way up and then it happens again(cranking noise). I have to pull it up another 2 inches and it will catch and it will go all the way up.

Now when its all the way up, I push the up button and it makes the cranking noise, but the window is all the way up already. On my passenger side when I push up it doesnt make any noise. seems like the driver side doesnt know its all the way up already. so dont konw whats up with this part.

I know you guys are goign to say the motor is dying but when its coming up, the motor doesnt stop, it just keeps on going till it hits those trouble spots. It seems to be off like 1-2inches. if I pull it up like 2 inches it will catch and it will keep on rolling the window up. it just has these 2 trouble spots coming up. it doesnt seem to be sync so it doesnt go in 1 motion.

so by moving it 2 inches, the window will go up with no problem. but thats a pain in the butt to do all the time. Is thsi what people meant that it is off track? if so, what do I need to do to fix it?

thanks in advance

I still think the motor is dead. Half way is when the regulator has the most torque on it so that's where the motor is binding.

It sounds to me like one of the nylon gears in the motor is trashed. That's your grinding noise.

Did you search?? I'm pretty sure it's posted all over the place here. Tell him to take the door panels off and it'll be plainly obvious what he needs to do.
