dies on starup, then runs fine...!!!!!!
Monday, July 03, 2006 6:39 PM
ok so everytime i start the car, after like 5-10sec, it idles very roughly and then dies. I need to floor it and keep it onver 5k rpm for it to not dies. then after i kept rpm high for like 20-30sec, the car runs fine and doesn't do that until next startup.
anyone have an idea of whats going on?
thanx.

Idle Air Control valve is more than likely sticking closed. It is a common problem and will effect it most at cold start, start ups.

When you floor it, does it blow a bunch of black smoke as in it is running rich?

ok, but why does it act fine and drive very well, even on idle at a light after i florred it for a couple secs....?
all i need to do for it to be fine and drive like normal, is floor it and keep rpm at 5k at start up for about 10-20sec!!!

Cold Start Stumble. There was a TSB for it, but most of the people that had the work done never really saw any benefit.

It's a standard feature on 2.4L with a manual transmission from 96-99. Learn to enjoy, there, to my knowledge, has never been a viable fix developed.

Check your FPR. You described almost exactly what my '99 was doing when the FPR went out. That is why I asked you if it was running rich and blowing black smoke. Once the car was started, revved up to clear it out, it ran perfectly. It was just a bitch to get started and wouldn't run smooth until revved up a bit.

And is it white smoke or is it gray/black smoke? White smoke is bad news...that usually means water is getting into the combustion chamber. If it is white, then check your coolant and oil levels and make sure they aren't looking funny.

well, it had an adjustable one, i tought it was that so i put the stock fuel rail with stock fpr. but i dunno if i can trust that regulator!!!!
for the smoke, i'm not sure. if i would burn coolant, it would burn all the time, not only on startup right?
well.... i think its time to install the new afpr on the cav, and put the cav's regulator on the sunfire and see...
thanx

ok, i just plugged my wideband from the cav on the fire and the problem is its running too rich! i see afr of 9-10:1 even after it warmed up. the oxygen sensor was disconnected so i can put the wideband in. black smoke was coming out of the pipe and i checked the plug and they are all black! even the wideband sensor after like 15-20min on the car was all black!!!
i'm going to install the new afpr on my cav and be putting the can fpr on the fire and we'll see...
also with the O2 disconnected, the car didn't die. i know on start up, the car is suppose to run in open loop so the O2 sensor should make a difference on startup, so would a bad ECT be the problem?
any advice would be welcome.
thanx

Ignore the TCC comment. It has absolutely nothing to do with what you have described. TCC is the part that fails on the older autos that cause bad shifting and stalling when you come to a stop because the torque convertor doesn't disengage. It has nothing to do with the engine running rich.
