A/C (Low on freon?)

hello i'm new to thye j-body forums. have a 2002 2.2L cavalier. I seem to have some A/C problem. I'mnot sure if i'm just low on freon or if my compressor is bad. what the situation is:
if i have my a/c on my rpm's jump and the cold air goes from cold to warm. it drastically changes the power of the vehicle when my A/C is on. any light on this matter will be greatly appreciated.

I don't know much about fixing A/C myself, but there is a great "sticky" write up about it at the top of this forum! Good luck!

hmm... goes from cold to warm immediately or in just a minute or 2?

Cold to warm isn't right. The jump in rpms is to compensate for the drag the compressor puts on the engine, to keep engine speed, at idle, at a normal setting. And OH, what a drag the a/c puts on our poor little 4-bangers! All you out there with manuals know what I mean! Anyway, I'd say the jump is due to the PCM thinking the system is on, but a sensor is reading low/no freon pressure and stops the compressor from pumping nothing/running dry/burning up. Have the a/c leak-pressure tested to find the problem.

One more thing.... its not freon anymore. Its R-134 refrigerant (freon is R-12), but that's besides the point... most people understand what you mean.

I'd recharge it first w/ 134 and see if that does anything.
