Greetings Group -
A couple of weeks ago I posted a question about my instrument panel lights being on all the time when the car is running. (2002 Sunfire) I received one reply from a Cav owner who said that did not happen with his ride.
I just recently discovered that my parking lights and instrument panel lights are on if the ignition switch is turned to the "ON" position. Then, of course, the DRL's are also on if the automatic trans is in any position except "ParK".
The parking/instrument panel lights should definitely not be on unless the driver chooses them to be on by turning the switch to the first position on the stalk. So what I have is an abnormal condition.
I guess what I could use is some guidance in troubleshooting from voices of experience (or at least knowledge with respect to this condition). I would leave fooling around with the ignition swich and steering column assemblies to experts. Maybe it's just a stuck relay contact somewhere.
Can anyone help?

I know this is a stupid question to ask, but i have to ask....when you say that your park lights are on with the key in the "on" position, you are saying that you have full back lighting in the panel as IF you turned on your lights? Radio lights are also on?
you are also saying that the DRL lights are on along with the instrument lights, as if it's in gear?

I keep rereading your post in hopes that i can figure out what the problem is,,,,,if i have this correct let me know.....
you are saying that: when you have the ignition in the ON position the back lighting on the cluster and entire dash (radio, HVAC) are lit, and the outside parking lights are on as well as the DRL lights just as if you turned the parking lights on from the switch manually. Is that right?
Does this still happen when you have the car running? or does it go back to normal with no dash lights etc?

OK - I re-read my own post and I can see that it is confusing.
You get in the car. Start it up. The parking lights and instrument panel lights are on. The same as if I had turned them on with the switch on the stalk - only I didn't touch the switch.
The DRL's are fine - they function the way they should.
I thought that maybe it (the parking lights on) had something to do with the fact that the car was running when I first noticed it. But the parking lights come on as soon as the ignition switch is turned to the "ON" position.
The parking lights should only come on when the light switch, not the ignition switch, is turned.
