My ECM recently died out on me and I'm looking for a new one. Here's my question, does it matter what type of ECM I get....meaning is there a difference between the Manual and Automatic ones.
YES , the autos idle lower then a manual.
Ask PJ , theflyingskwirl , he tried swtiching PCMs with an auto/manual , and it did not work properly.
also remember whne u get ur new PCM, u need to get it programmed to ur instrument cluster, or your theft mode will start. u can get new PCM's from advaned for like 75 bux
how do you get it programmed?
I have a 98 that is having shifting issues so I will be picking up a new PCM. Will I experience the "theft light" issues with that older PCM?
If you can get a computer (PCM,ECM,whatever) that was in an identical set-up, you may be OK, escept for the 'PassLock' radio security feature. Not a problem if you have an aftermarket radio. Otherwise, you'll just have to get one that matches your model year and get it reflashed with your vehicle's specs at a dealership

Yes inquiring minds want to know!!
Not a carbon fiber hood!!
in a 2000 up, a PCM swap (barring the transmission issue) should be plug and play. The BCM controls the radio and passlock. You will likely have to reset the theftlock on a new PCM anyway, but its an easy procedure, just annoying. Install the new PCM, get in the car, shut the door and keep it shut throughout the procedure (have a beer or 2 handy, this takes a bit) stick the key in and attempt to start the car. If installed correctly the car will fire and run (stop here, Theftlock is not triggered) or will fire and run a few seconds then die and the Theft light illuminates. In that case, leave the key in and in the RUN position for at least 10 minutes, at which point the light should go out. Attempt to start the car again from RUN position, car should run normally. theftlock is now reset. finish your beer and you can get outta the car.
And Shifted, the 2000 up J-Bodies DO have Passlock. It even says so in the owners manual. But anyhoo, I posted the above JUST IN CASE.
