Lately my 87 sunfire gt has been idoling rough somtimes and just stalls out at a set of lights or whenever im stopped. but still runs ok when driving. I am thinking the timing chain may be stretched but not sure.
any idea what the problem could be?

How long has it been since youre car has had a tune up?. Has the fuel filter been changed lately?

maybe the fuel filter, new oil, new air filter but never checked the fuel filter.
could it be timing? this just started after i poped the clutch HARD in reverse. after that the check engine light went on and it just started running like hell for an hour then everthing was ok. now this. SO i figured i may have stretched the timing chain a bit.
but as you guys said im going to buy a fuel filter today and change it.

how many miles are on the car? Mine had 91k miles when i changed my chain (last weekend), and it stil looked pretty damn good. Chances of it stretching are slim, but it does happen. I would have the CEL scanned, and see what the code is, and go from there.
throwin an engine light? could be a knock censor
it threw the check engine light then went off after an hour. bought a filter today but can't get the old one off yet, so we'll have to see if that works

My car starts rough and takes a few seconds (like 10) to get the idol down. Then it doestn want to accelrate like it normalyl does until i get to 3k rmp. I just changed oil, fuelfilter, air filter, and it has plenty of gas. Car has 123xxx miles. Spark plugs?? IT seems that it starts rough until the computer and figure a solution out and then it is fine once i drive half a mile or so. Stressing me out as I still owe 2k on it. 97 z24 5speed. Thanks!
well changed the fuel filter and that was it. It rund great now, better than ever. best 12 bucks I ever spent!
