Hayne's manual

Is the Hayne's manual worth it?

I just got a '97 Z24 and am unfamiliar with the 2.4L DOHC, whereas the 2.2L L4 and 3.1L v6 were relatively easy to work on, I am anticipating more complex failures with the 2.4L.

If not Hayne's what manuals do other people have? I want something to tell me where everything is, and how to diagnose from engine codes or whatever, not something that tells me how to change a spark plug or 'install a gas cap'.

Thanks.

Haynes is on level with Chilton's in content quality and clarity. I find, however, Haynes lacks a bit in the engine maintenance department and has more interior how-to than Chilton's. Of course, GM shop manuals got 'em both topped in everything -- including the high prices for GM publications!

The dealer albums are the ones to get but they cost large if you want the book form (Ebay sellers sell the CD versions cheaper). Haynes are usually the next best thing I've found but I was ready to throw mine in the garbage over the weekend.. It tells you that if your rear brake drums are stuck on (mine are right now) you should spray the hub with penetrating oil to break up the rust (did that - Didn't work). Then it says you should go to section X and see how to adjust the Ebrake cables to allow the ebrake shoes to relax and the drum will come off. Too bad you get to section X and it's the right section on adjusting the cables, but the first step says to block the tires. Second step says to remove the rear wheels. 3rd step says "remove rear drums".

Um, yeah.
