aight, so far ive bent a screwdriver and broken a socket. The air gun does nothing. a 5 foot "breaker" bar (pipe) does nothing. exactly how tight are these things put on and does anyone have any ideas how to break it loose?

Rent a puller from your local Autozone. Its a free rental, just need a deposit.
You're probably not going to be able to get that off any other way (as you've already found out)
Or if you have a steering wheel puller, that should work as well.

Talk about forgetting to get the info right. I meant the nut that holds the HB on. I have a gear puller. sry people.

Ahh.. OK.
Double check and make sure its not reverse threaded (lefty-tighty, righty-loosy). GM likes to do some crazy things every so often. I'll check on my car in the morning.
New crankshaft and a plasma cutter is a viable option.

i was so thinking that earlier, but then all i found in my garage was a drill and i didnt feel like drilling it out...
reverse thread, never thought of that. Ill try it in the morning.

its not reverse threaded man you need an impact wrench!!! I went through the same thing you did and tried everything and when i put the cheap little electric impact on there it flew right off. And rent the puller man its free all you need is a deposit becuase if you start jamming screwdrivers in there and denting things like i did you will pay in the future =( i puntcured a hole in the cover didnt know it cuz i just left the pulley on there when i got frustrated and ran out of oil on the way to the races.
got an impact. had the air turned up to about 140. still wont budge. Did come across another idea...
you but a breaker bar on the nut and the handle agaist the frame. disable the engine from starting and tap the starter to break it loose. sounds like it will work. Im going to try it.

do that and say goodbye to the flywheel/flexplate gear. Also raelly hard on the starter.
Do it right or don't do it.
You have a few choice. You can take a hammer and hit the head of the bolt to help "brake" it loose. You can up the bolt (yes it will make it bigger and tighter) but it can brake it loose inside.
Then use a GOOD impact gun. There's different grade in impact gun. You can have a weak gun. If you can't brake it loose with a 3' pipe and an 18" bar with an half inch socket, you are just not strong enough.
Also, I hope you have good tools, not those Japan socket.

I know you are not trying to diss me...but ill run down the list anyway.
Im 6"2" and strong. I have a good impact gun. I am using my impact sockets. They are not breaking. I attached 6 feet worth of pipe but cannot get the engine to stop turning. I GIVE UP.
Not really. I think ill go beat on it for a few hours tomorrow morning...

Keep trying with the impact gun. Sit there and let it push for a while.

try alot of w-40 man. and the car is in gear right? should be in R if manual becuase thats your strongest gear and obviously in park if auto. Also man just take a low heat blow torch to it for about 30 seconds after the w-40 (wipe the stuff off first) thats what I did to my buddies (but be careful) and it un screwed like a soda pop top.
got it. my friends has this kick @ss tool that attaches a chain around the harmonic balancer. broke 2 sockets but it came off!!! and heres the kicker...once broken loose the bolt will spin out by hand with NO resistance.

Demon, glad you finally made it !!
Those throuth bolts usually give me fits also....
I've never figured out exactly why....
Could it be corrosion because they're located so low ??
