weird noise while driving

first of all, the car in question isn't a J. it's a 2000 dodge durango. i told a friend i'd try and find out what it could be and figured i'd ask here instead of signing up for a dodge forum. i searched online and didn't find much useful info.

ok here's what it is. she says there's a weird noise coming from the front end of her truck/suv, whatever you wanna call it. said it sounds like metal on metal. i stood outside when she was leaving work and heard it. sounded more like a squealing noise. at first she said she only heard it when she turned the wheel. so i said it could be the steering belt and/or low pwr steering fluid. this morning she said last nite she heard it while driving down a straight away. she hasn't been on the highway, just around town driving ( 30-40 mph )...so i don't know if it would occur at high speeds.

then i got to thinking "brakes" but she says it happens w/o the brakes being applied. i'm sure that doesn't mean it can't be the brakes. could it possibly be that the shoes or something in the wheel assembly is warped, or maybe bad bearings and is causing a metal on metal?? it's not consistent. she explained it like "when you get something stuck in your tire and every time the that spot of the tire hits pavement" i'd consider that consistent, but anywho. i need to hear it again to confirm that it is metal on metal and not a squealing noise.

sorry for the long novel, lol. any help is greatly appreciated.

thanks all

If it makes the noise without the brakes applied and then goes away when the brakes are applied, it's your brake pads.

Isn't this stuff on the driving test in your state?
All modern disks squeal as they wear out to let you know they need to be changed.

alright, i'll let her know.

and i don't know about it being on the driving test here in MD. i just transferred my license when i moved here, didn't have to take any tests.

could still be PS too, if it's leaking, and gets low enuff, it'll wine wen the wheels aren't being turned

You would probably get a "better" answer if you were to post the problem on a Dodge forum....

Posting it here is like posting a j-body problem on a Dodge forum.....

i know, but i wasn't gonna sign up for a dodge forum just to ask one question. if i owned a dodge as well as the J, then i would have posted it there. she took it to the shop, ended up being the brakes. as well as a bunch of other things. computer, sensors, differential.
