PLEASE READ, car runs a tad bit hot..why?

Well, ive been trying to get my car to pass emissions but no luck. My nox levels are high which is definetly attributed to running hot. I own a 99 Pontiac Sunfire GT (2.4). For instance, when Im driving on the freeway and come off, after about a minute the cars temperature starts the rise. I would understand if it rose driving in traffic, but it just rises too fast right off the freeway. Once I switch on the fan, it stays at operating temperature which could probably prove that my rad is functioning properly (I have the cooling fan mod). Im assuming its the thermostat, or a clogged radiator but im not sure. How do I check for our motors? I was also thinking it could be the coolant itself, so I was thinking of changing that? I also want to add, that it does not leak and is full of coolant.

Any help is appreciated.

If you are just wanting it to pass the ontario emissions test, put some methanol in ur gas tank and that should do the trick. Same thing was happeneing with a buddy's pick-up, put some methanol in and it passed.

Methanol? does anyone second that?

Ive used Methanol for emissions testing, It works, Thats not what you need to fixed the high temp reading. I would first of all is do a complete coolant flush on youre cooling system, Heres a good tip for that, drain out little bit of youre coolant, then add the flush solution, Drive around for a day, then flush out youre cooling system, Then re[lace youre thermostat, add youre dexcool coolant then see if youre car still climbs high temp, If not for extra protection in stop and go driving, Heres a additive product from Red Line - wetter water, It really works great. If you are still getting high temps, youre rad maybe plugged, Or water pump is getting wornout.

Good Luck,

oh i hope its not the water pump....im really not in the mood of fixing that, wouldnt it leak if it was the water pump?

dumb question i know, but, have you checked to make sure your coolant is filled to the correct level?

Water pumps are belt driven, so it spins more as the belt speeds up, they dont get wore out. Secondly they leak when they fail, the weep hole does.

High Nox is caused by the car running to hot. Either your coolant is plugged up someplace, your t-stat stuck closed, or EGR is not working.

I agree. The normal water pump failure mode is leakage. Leakage can cause loss of coolant and result in higher temps, but if you are not losing coolant, forget about the water pump causing your problem. I would suggest replacing the thermostat. They are cheap and worse case, you have at least eliminated a source of your problem and you now have a spare stat.

I don't know alot about Cavaliers or how the timing is set,

but maybe your base timing is off? Hot engine + high NOx = base timing is off. Atleast that's how it is in a SBC.
