Brake Lights not working?
Wednesday, June 14, 2006 8:07 PM
So my brake lights havent been working lately on my 2000 sunfire. I checked the fuse and that seems fine. My blinkers, 4-ways and the third brake light works but my actual brake lights dont. I changed both the bulbs and still nothing. Does anyone have any advice on what could be the problem? Thanks

Question:
when you turn the lights on, do they come on?
Are they factory?

Check the socket where the light bulbs is connected.

also it's a possibility that the brake switch is bad? The third brake light is wired up seperate from the other 2, maybe you have a cut wire or a ground wire? I would maybe for an experiment, take a piece of wire the same gauge and tap it into the brake switch and wire that to a bulb socket to see it it works. It if it does then maybe there is a socket problem at the tail lights or a loose wire.

Also, if you are good with a digital multimeter you can measure the voltage at the socket to see if it changes when u press the brake pedal. I've never had to check mine before so i'm not sure if there will be a difference in voltage when the pedal is pushed. I would think there would be though.

yes they are factory lights and yes the tail lights come on when the head lights are turned on. does this mean there is a short in the turn signal line?

i mean the brake light line

well, i'm not sure if there is a short, as u would think anything shorting would cause the fuse to blow....

I would try testing to see if u even get a signal when the pedal is pushed. At least u will know if ur brake switch works right?

sounds like the brake light switch on the brake pedal. a simple test would be to disconnect and remove the switch, take it off the car, plug a multimeter into the switch connector, set the meter to continuity, if you have it, or set it to measure ohms. with the meter hooked to the switch, close the switch by hand, as if you were hitting the brakes. If the meter beeps (if its on continuity) or if the ohms scale shows a reading of around .3 to 1 ohm, then that means the switch is good, if it doesn't beep, or if the ohms are really high or the meter reads OL then the switch is bad and needs replaced
