hey guys i have a 99 z24, and i belive one of my wheel barings is screwed. when i turn corners right i get an odd "whirling" noise, i also get a bit of a noise at high speeds. on left corners i get no noise. my question is this, is this a wheel baring problem...and if so WHAT SIDE IS IT? i have some people tell me that it would be a right side baring problem and some say left...i have no idea. any help would be appreciated. thanks.
Geoff
Sounds like the left side to me. What side does it sound like it's coming from?
I have the same model and year car. It's the driver's side wheel bearing hub assembly. If you shop around you should be able to get one for about $100. Unlike other vehicles you don't need to drop any ball joints, etc. to change this part. If you can install front brakes and rotors yourself, you can change the wheel bearing hub also. It's relatively easy.
Note: It's 140 ft lbs of torque on the centre wheel nut upon reinstallation.
Yep, they'll hollar out, if they're bad, when ya put a load on them like turning. Got my parts from RockAuto, good prices and service.
so how do ya tell which side is going bad and what size socket do ya need to chagne the hub out.......i have the same problem.....at 60 mph or so and turn the wheel to the right slighty the noise is louder
Whichever side that moans when a load is applied (outside tire while turning, for example) is the offending unit. The hub bearing assemblies are held on by torx head nuts, so get a GOOD T-50 torx socket. Keep the socket STRAIGHT inline with the bolt to avoid stripping out the head.
so to get this right...theoretically. if im turning right and get the noise its the left baring and if i turn left and get the noise its the right baring? it seems to me that more pressure is being applied on the right side if im turning right isnt it? im a bit confused here.

or jack up your car after making sure your lug nuts are tight on the wheel and wiggle your tire forward and back with some force there should not be any play if there is thats the side you need to replace =)

If you're turning right, the car leans down on the left side. Taken to extremes, the car will lift the inside wheel off the ground during a turn and put a "shload" of forces on the outside wheel.

thanks john wilken...i guess i didnt really think that one through, that makes sence that the outside wheel would be getting the pressure.
