loud squeek from driver side front tire.
Sunday, June 04, 2006 4:54 PM
Ok bare with me guys, im far from mechanically inclined.

2001 sunfire gt
lowered/rims

WHile driving, car is making a loud squeeak at all speeds. WHen i turn left while driving, the car still squeeks. If i turn right, it seems to stop. If i break, it was stopping, but as of today it will still squeek if brakes applied.

Any idea what the issue could be? I plan on taking it in somewhere tomorrow (i live in the northend of the city, so if there are any recommendations, that'd help too).

Probably your brake pads are worn and they have a metallic part that gets in contact with the disc and it is doing it´s job make a lot of noise so the owner of the car notices something needs attention.

yes....but should it not being doing that while the brakepads are being pressed against the rotor? While in rotation they make the noise, but when the brake is applied, the noise stops.

Not if the wear is significant enough. When in 'almost' or gentle contact in the begining, it'll not make much or any noise when you hit the brakes. But, as the wear increases and the metal part is forced against the rotor even more, it sure will squeal all the time.

Agreed even if the brakes are not applied either ur pads are worn down or the metal plates on the back on the pads are rubbing or the wear indicator on the pads is touching the rotor itself.I would recomm new brakes on the front if there is significant wear and gm pads live a short life if they are the original pads.I would consider new rotors if they are scared bc a machine shop will charge u 10 or 20 bux to turn those while u may come out better by upgrading to a new rotor by bendix,or another brand and the pads as well. And make sure u put some brake QUIET on the back on the pads and let it dry 10-20 minutes then install if u do the job urself.

just for update for others who have same symptoms

replaced rotors and pads and problem is fixed.

were they worn out? seems like mine started something similar, only the squeeks come when going striaght or to the right. I was initially thinking wheel bearing (as i already replaced the left), but now im not sure. The brakes were all replaced up front not too long back, along with new calipers and new fluid (had it flushed).

well i now have a similar problem..i get more of a loud high pitched squeel (sp?) sound from

my drivers side..they are slotted rotors and hawk pads..i think i need to replace the pads...

but before i do...i only get the sound when i'm driving..as in...I tap the brake slightly..enough for the

lights to come on..and it goes away...what would it be?

Ozzie by some permatex or other brand brake quiet to apply to the back of the pads and let it dry for 20 minutes or more. What this does is to prevent the backing plates or shims on the back of the brake pads from making metal to metal contact. This is not a uncommon issue with any car or brake squealing that occurs at any speed under most conditions provided the brake pads and or rotors r not worn down. The brake quiet is super cheap and very effective in resolving the noise u encounter. This will resolve the problem based on ur comment.

No not really pematex is one of many to choose from.Typically any brand is A OK and serves the purpose just fine.If u do not find it on the shelf at ur local auto store ask one of the associates bc sometimes they keep it behind the counter when the sell new pads.

That is the classic symptom of worn pads... It didn't make sense to me at first, but that is how you can always diagnose it. I have the same problem with my truck, and have been too lazy to change the pads, so when I drive through town I keep my left foot lightly on the brake lol. It stops the squeeking.
