Ok so the car has been down for about 3 weeks due to mocking up the turbo. I started it up and the horriblest noise ( like taking metal grinding together) coming from what I thought was the alternator, since I've already deleted the AC.
Go to autozone pick up a new alternator swap it in sitting in the parking lot and start it, low and behold the same noise happens.
So I go inside get my core charge back and pick up and can of WD40. I spray all the pulleys where they connect to the engine and the noise goes away for a couple seconds until I cut the wheel.
So after driving it back the noise is now all the time if:
A. I'm below 2000 RPM
B. If i cut the wheel sitting still (like maybe move the wheels 2mm)
C. If I cut the wheel sharp well driving
But if I simply rev it, it goes away.
Anyone got any ideas. Probably the belt but I wouldn't think it would make a metalic noise.
Your belt is probably bad if it's original. How tight is it? Cracked at all?
WD40 has no place in the moving parts of cars too.
belt has probably 8000 miles on it and its pretty tight. and its not cracked at all.
My guess would power steering pump or youre belt tensioner is wornout.
WD40 is not a lubricant! It is just a penetrating solution. It can do more damage than good in some cases.
I really wasn't trying to lube anything. I was trying to break up what rust is down there.
So I came to the conclusion that it was the power steering pump, since sometimes @ low RPM's it wouldn't assist for a couple seconds until it caught up with itself.
So today I replaced the pump and amazingly the noise is gone.
And FYI its a 99, 2200, manual, just in case anyone else has the same problem.
