replacing a 2.4 twincam
Sunday, May 21, 2006 6:25 PM
Hello, I have a 1998 z24 convertible with a 2.4 twin cam engine that i blew about a month ago. This week is $65 engines at harry's u pull it in hazelton pa and i was thinking about taking a look around for a replacement. Now i know that grand ams, sunfires, and alero's also had this engine in certain years, could anyone post me a list of years and vehicles which have compatible engines that i can drop into my car. I want to do a 3800sc swap, but wouldnt have the time to get everything done, as my goal is to have my car ready for the premier for ff3 at my local movie theater, we have rycers lined up outside, and i would like a running car again... any help is apreciated...

96-99 2.4. for the 99, check the injectors lenght. If it's a long injectors, you can't use it.

a 2.4 is a 2.4. They are the same wether they come from a GA or a cavy.

Stay in those years and you'll be fine.

could you tell me the hp ratings of the 2.4 compared to the 2.3ho? and if it would be worth it to hunt for a high output engine instead... im talking entire engine, not just the tb and intake manifold... basically what are anyones suggestions on what i should do to make the most power, without having to get my pcm reprogrammed, i was looking into the v6 swaps until i found out that gauges dont work, i dont want to redo my entire interior... i guess, just rip a 2.4 and mod the air intake to the h.o? or are internals different.... im sorry but i come from a rycer background, my modifications involve a body kit, lambo doors, led underbody kit, interior and audio, aside from a dtm muffler with axel back piping, and an intake, i have nothing, but im looking to change that lol, i was going to do the 3800sc swap because i actually found a possible donar car, but the computer work is too much for me, what suggestions does anyone have?

also what about alero's they are more abundent, and were made from 00-04 i believe with the twincam, my neighbor has an 01 with my engine....

so your saying stick with just the 2.4, and dont swap anything...

Its an easier swap to put the 2.4 back in, 3800 S/C is tons of work, and lots of $ to do. Your car now is setup for the 2.4, and a 2.3L swap would be tough for wiring purposes as well. As for 00-02 2.4L's a lot more has to be done to swap it in. Better off looking for a 96-98 2.4L as well, 99's were the rare one's of the bunch, but a blessing when using some newer parts (like the GM S/C for the LD9). Best sticking with what you have.

what kind of power gains would i be looking at if i used urweak's guide and just modded to a h.o. intake... also the w42 engine that made 190hp, what was that in, and what was special about it that made is get an extra 40 ponies...

The W41 made 30 hp more than a Lo and 40hp more than a 95 2.3.

1- Better head
2- Bigger cams
3- Better intake manifold
4- Better exhaust manifold
5- Better timming and fuel map
6- Higher compression
7- Lighter parts
8- No balance shaft (compare to a 95)

It was ONLY in the 92-93 Achieva Scx and in some 91 442

yes thankyou, forgot about the egr valve... anyway, it seems like the w41 is impossible to find and not worth the trouble of the swap for me as i just read into it, what kind of power gains would i be looking at by just swapping a ho intake manifold? anything else i could do cheaply while im gonna be in a yard for power??
